“Hire a guide”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

We hired a guide to spend the day walking us through Aya Sofia, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, the Hippodrome and Topkapi Palace (including the Haram room). It was well worth it.

“It's why you come to Istanbul”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

The Sultanahmet area of Istanbul is surprisingly compact and lets you see an incredible amount without a LOT of walking. Mosques, museums, bazaars and markets and shops, the cistern and hippodrome, restaurants all within blocks of each other.

“Even those not interested in history can enjoy it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

Historic areas of Istanbul are mainly located in Sultanahmet area. It include churches, mosques, museums, palaces & cisterns etc. No fees are required if you are visiting mosques or churches. But for all the other attractions you might have to pay fees. Palaces require higher fees followed by museums & other attractions.

Thus, if you are not interested in history you may skip palaces & museums. That will be a complete waste for you. But still there is some magic in roaming around the historical areas & trying road side food. Definitely worth a visit.

Taksim square is another important area & you should explore options to reach there by public transportation. Trams, boats, buses as well as cable cars/metros are excellent in Istanbul.

My daughter and I absolutely loved Istanbul - we both want to go back but this time spend more time there ... beautiful, clean, friendly, good value and of course amazing history / sites.

“The Grand Bazzar”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2013

Not to be missed but watch your wallet/purse. The Bazzar is HUGE, unlike anything I had ever seen before. You can buy virtually anything there and you are expected to haggle on the price. Be prepared to spend almost an entire day there. And try not to get lost! There are so many entrances and exits it is mind boggling - and all under roof as well.
