We had a an absolutely wonderful tour of Ephesus with Mete Pakyurek as our guide. There were five of us (four adults and a teenager). We were greeted at the port by Mete and his driver. The van's seating arrangement allowed Mete to face us and focus his full attention on us as we traveled from Kusadasi Port to Ephesus and other local sites (e.g., the church of St. John). His explanations of the history, and of each site we visited were terrific. Mete is very personable, knows his subject and is able to answer most any question. He gave us insights into the ancient life here, and also into contemporary life in Turkey. A highlight of our day was lunch at Melitour's country home, where we were shown terrific Turkish hospitality and served a delicious lunch of traditional dishes. Mete had a well planned itinerary for our day, and we moved from site to site very smoothly. He had tickets at the ready for entry, so we were able to concentrate and fully experience the treasures of each historical site and museum, all with his excellent explanations. Our Ephesus tour with Mete was one of the highlights of our trip, and we could not recommend it more highly.

We booked this tour because of the recommendation found in Rick Steves' travel book. The inquiry was answered the next morning. Upon payment a complete listing on what was supplied was sent. A photo of the guide was also sent. When we arrived the guide arrived. The other guide had a problem and Ata was sent as a replacement. He was a most knowlageble guide. This man had studied archeology for four years. He also knew the way around the crowds that descend on Ephesus when there are more than one cruise ship in port. We were taken in a new Mercedes van to all of the sites. We were also taken to the home of the owner where we has a delighful lunch in the garden. We reccomend this tour to anyone who wants to see Ephasus without hesitation. This tour is vastly superior to the crowded bus tours offered buy the cruise lines

My wife and I just returned from an Eastern Mediterranean cruise, with a port call in Izmir (19-Sep-2012). We only had the day in port, so we hired Melitour for our shore excursion to Ephesus. I have to say the experience was one of the highlights of our trip.
Our van was well kept and new, and driver was great. The lunch we were served at the Melitour farmhouse (a few minutes from Ephesus) was excellent. The meal itself was one of the best of our trip, and the veranda setting was a nice respite.
Our guide, Mete, was outstanding. He was able to convey fluidly the history and context of the sites and artifacts that we saw, while still relating anecdotes to keep things from getting too dry. We wanted to make the most of our time, and he surpassed our expectations there, too. We were able to visit the Ephesus Museum, the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, and a good Turkish rug co-op (briefly), while still spending as much time in Ephesus and the Terrace Houses as we desired. I should mention that Melitour was also very receptive to our requests when it came to forming the itinerary prior to booking.
Most importantly, Mete was able to rearrange our itinerary on the fly. As we drove out to Ephesus in the morning, he could tell at a distance that the crowds were going to be overwhelming. Instead of forging ahead, he recommended flipping the order of our stops so that we could return in the early afternoon. It could not have worked out better. We had most of our morning stops to ourselves, and the crush of other cruise visitors had subsided by the time we arrived at the historical site in the early afternoon. Without his judgement, our overall experience could have been very different.
We would not hesitate to use Melitour again if we have the chance to return to Turkey.

In May, 2012, my husband and I took a Mediterranean cruise. One of our ports was Kusadusi. Rick Steve's book recommended Melitours, so I contacted them by email. They got back to me right away with a great itinerary. Mete was our guide and was waiting for us at the cruise port. The day included Ephesus and the Terrace Houses, lunch, the House of the Virgin Mary and the museum. A very full day but at our own pace. A week before we left on the cruise, my husband broke his leg. He manuvered pretty well with a cane and a walking boot, but he was slower than most people. Because we were on a private tour, we were able to go at our own pace which made the whole day much more pleasureable. Our lunch was at Meli's country house which includes a peach orchard. We were greeted by mother hens with their chicks pecking through the orchard along with turkeys, ducks, geese, dogs and cats. The food is cooked by Meli and her helpers on site. The first course had at least ten plates of different vegetables served family style. Mete ate with us and we had wonderful conversation. Mete is very knowlegeable on Ephesus and Turkey. We stuffed ourselves on the first course then came beans and rice and then dessert. The food was what Turkish people would normally eat and very delicious. If you visit on a cruise or just want a tour at your own pace, we highly recommend Melitours.

We booked private tours for Istanbul and Izmir/Ephesus from this company based on Rick Steve's mention of them. Not disappointed. Wished we had a longer stop in port at Izmir as we did not have enough time to go to the country house for snacks and a visit. I had really looked forward to that but it's not the tour company's fault we had such a short day in port. Our guide in Izmir was Mete and in Istanbul we were with Hassan. Hassan was truly wonderful--we would love to come back to Turkey and do more touring with him. He was simply excellent!!!

Skip the cruise line shore excursions and hire a private guide--it's probably the same price and it's an entirely different experience. Having arranged private guides in all but two ports on our 12 day cruise we would absolutely go with private guides in the future and encourage anyone else to do the same.
