After the long flight from the east coast of the USA to Istanbul, my friends, husband and I were looking for a good restaurant where we could take our time, enjoy the surroundings and eat. We wanted authentic Turkish food and something very comfortable. The front desk at the Citadel gave us walking directions to the Sultanahmet area which had many dining options.
As we approached the area we noticed men standing outside their establishments asking us to dine in their restaurant. One particularly sweet guy, Ahmed, showed us his menu and promised us good food with comfortable surroundings. Ahmed charmed me and so I made a new friend and discovered an excellent restaurant. As a matter of fact, we were so impressed that we ate at Rumist 4 times during our week long stay. Ahmed knows the menu well and be sure to take his suggestions. He is very skilled at encouraging you to step inside the restaurant without making you feel awkward. If I had a restaurant he would be my star employee.
The owner and chef was superb as well. I asked him for something not on the menu and he accommodated me. The lamb he cooked was to die for. The service was terrific. We even got ice!!!! We also got to hear some stories about his family.
We really enjoyed sitting outside on comfortable cushioned chairs. It was chilly in the evenings but the outdoor heaters kept us warm. Old friends, new friends, great food, wonderful atmosphere all added to our trip to Istanbul! If you stop by please tell Ahmed his friend from Baltimore said, "Hi!"
