“Handy Location”
Reviewed January 12, 2010

The Hotel is situated within walking distance of Sultanahmet and many other tourist areas like the Topkapi palace and mosques. The area is slightly hilly and would be a 5 min walk uphill to the tram station where you can get to many points in Istanbul from.
If arriving on Easyjet from London you will arrive at Sabiha Gokcen Airport which is a long distance from the Hotel. It can be done via public transport but very difficult. Taxi is most expensive so best to take the airport shuttles direct to hotel. With a little bargaining in the terminal you can probably get it for a price of TRL50 (EUR30) at a push. TRL60 seemed to be the more common fare. Though I do notice the Hotel website quoting EUR70 for 1-3 passengers total. From Istanbul you can probably arrange a lower rate back from one of the many agents in the tourist areas offering airport transfer.
The hotel is situated minutes from a group of dozens of restaurants. Both touristic and local. The menu in all seemed much the same type of seafood. The area around the hotel appeared to be safe and whilst a little dark at night in some side streets still not threatening as in some cities.
The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. The rooms and public areas kept very clean. Bottled water was supplied daily free in the fridge. Breakfast is taken in a balcony on the roof offering views across the harbor and surrounding neighborhood. Food choice and quality was just OK but not extensive. TV channel choice in English was extremely limited. Rooms are slightly smallish but as per standard of most medium range European hotels. Comfortable and functional but not luxurious.

We had a family room - double bed upstairs and twin beds and bathroom downstairs so lots of space. I thought it was very good value. The location is great for all the main sights so we could walk/take tram to them all. Just around the corner is a group of restaurants specialising in fish but also serving meat, veggies. The hotel also has its own restaurant at similar prices and also produced a good breakfast as part of the room rate. The rose jam tastes like Turkish delight! .

I managed to arrive minus my suitcase and the staff went out and bought me a toothbrush and then made several calls on my behalf to the airport to try and locate it for which I was grateful. They were always very helpful. The tea making was not in the room on arrival but came as soon as requested as did extra pillows etc.

We took the hotal shuttle to/from the airport - it was a little beaten up and the driver spent a long time on his mobile on the way in but drove less erratically on the return trip. That was my only slight complaint as the rest of the hotel experience was very good.

We found the hotel on Trip Adviser originally. It seemed to be very new although is in an old building over a bank. the views are a bit ramshackle but that is old Istanbul for you. There are lots of other Best Westerns also near the main sights and would eb worth checking out oif this is full.

Visitor from India
We paid 14 Euro extra per night for a Sea View Room. Guess what? If we craned our necks out of the window sufficiently, we could get a tiny glimpse of a far away sea!
Location is amongst residential bulidings in ruin and a long uphill walk ( about 1 km) from the Grand Bazaar.
Tiny rooms and average breakfast.
Great dining street full of fun just behind the hotel was a plus.
All in all I would not stay again at this hotel. Highly over-priced for what it offers. Much better hotels available at lower rates.

Small, very clean and confortable rooms. The personnel is really friendly and it seems to be at home. The hotel has got a perfect location, near the main turistic places. The best thing is the terrace of the hotel, which gives a wonderful view on wonderful Istanbul.

Hotel Amber was a very good hotel, it was neat and clean and staff was very good and helping. The best thing about the hotel is it is situated in Sultan Ahmed area and a city centre, you have cabs, trams and metros easily available.
The only problem which I faced was of vegeterian food being a vegeterian it was difficult to get the food of my choice. I request hotel people to have some good vegeterian Indian food so that travellers like us do not face much problem

Regards

Saket

The Amber is beautifully updated and renovated. Quality materials, such as gorgeous marble and parquet floors are abundant throughout. In typical Best Western fashion, good standards of accommodation are adhered to. Rooms are small, but functional, with good quality mattresses, linens and modern, nice decor with Ottoman touches and newly updated bathrooms.

The location of the hotel, in a rapidly becoming gentrified neighborhood, down the hill from the Grand Baazar is good for those people who do not have to be in the midst of the tourist hubbub. That being said, it is only a 15 minute walk to Sultanahmet and a 5 minute walk up the hill to the Grand Baazar and the modern tram line connecting Kabatas with Zeytinburnu. You can use this tram to get to many of Istanbul's attractions, including, Sultanahmet, Dolmabahce Palace, the Galata tower and neighborhood, Taksim and the docks from where many of the tour boats cruising the Bosphorus depart., amongst others.

The top terrace of the hotel has magnificent views of the Sea of Marmara and is adjacent to the restaurant area, where the ample and very good complimentary breakfast is provided.

The most valuable asset of the Amber hotel is the wonderful staff. Nargiza, Jacob and Nesim at the front desk are charming and knowledgeable, with a commitment to make their guests feel welcome and efficiently tackling any request. The housekeeping staff maintains the rooms in an impeccable state of cleanliness and the waiting staff is again a credit to this efficiently run small hotel. The Turkish people are possibly some of the friendliest and helpful in the world and I can say this, because I have travelled a lot and the staff of the Amber a credit to ALL Turks.

I would gladly stay at the Amber hotel again and look forward to seeing Nargiza, Jacob, Nesim and the rest of the staff, again.
