“We felt ripped off”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

This fish restaurant charges you at Michelin star restaurant level.
Unfortunately the food isn't of the same level. We ate in many different restaurants in Istanbul for a week. This restaurant was the most expensive one, but certainly not the best.
Afterwards we both suffered from stomach upset.

“seafood restaurant on the quai”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

If from Grand Bazaar you are going to the Bosphorus on Tiyatro caddesi, there will be a region of Kumkapi and a set of restaurants already to Bosphorus. Among expensive is also inexpensive, cook well. We went to the coast of Bosphorus, there is more expensive restaurants on the quai, but you can choose fresh fish and chef fry it for you, wine is reasonable price. It is possible (it is necessary) to ask bargain, discount, even at alcohol cost. On the quai there are 4-5 restaurants. The food is cooked simply, but seafood all are fresh and tasty. Everything was pleasant.

“good food, poor service and too much hassle”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We have visited this restaurant this evening. All very welcoming and keen to assist you in your choice but once you have ordered you are pretty much ignored. There are a lot of staff but they all seemed more interested in watching tv - football, than making sure customers are happy. We ordered sea bass which was really enjoyable and we had no complaints about the food. We would have ordered desserts and coffee but it was difficult to gain anyone's attention. We asked for our bill but they forgot us and we had to ask again - twice! In the end we stood up to leave and asked again. Additionally we were continually hassled by sellers in the restaurant, we did not want to purchase roses, nuts, tissues, perfume, toy drums or horned sheep toys! It is really difficult to enjoy your meal and conversation with this constant bombardment, what a shame the restaurant staff are'nt as enthusiastic !

“A cynical money making machine”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We were tempted to have a dinner at Havuzbasi by a fluent salesman at the fish market. Since it was still a bit early, we ordered a relatively small meal - a dish of Hamsi, salad and raki and we said that we would order another fish dish later on if we will still be hungry. Our waiter displayed a visible dismay and suggested that we take also dish of shrimps. Naively, we agreed. We received a relatively generous dish of Hamsi and a small dish with four grilled jumbo-shrimps. We were indeed still hungry, so we ordered also a seabass (which was quite unimpressive).

When we received the bill, we discovered that the four shrimps suggested by the waiter cost 40TL, which is exactly double than any other comparable item on the menu (the Hamsi was 15TL and the seabass 20TL).

While this trick cost us a small amount of money (20TL), this ugly attitude left us with a bad feeling toward this place. Moreover, my partner suffered an upset stomach shortly after this annoying dinner. Avoid it.

“Fresh and seaside”
Reviewed January 14, 2012

Handy to Sultanahmet, the area of Kumkapi specializes in seafood. Everything is ultra fresh and in fact the area is loaded with fishmongers as well as restaurants. I did not find anything particularly creative or noteworthy, but I enjoyed my whole grilled black sea bream. Good view of Marmara Sea. Good seafood, but I would not necessarily go way out of my way.
