Boncuk used to be very good. The real Boncuk is in Asmalı Mescit Street called Boncuk Gourme and it is excellent. Check it out.

“Great Food... average service.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2011

This was the second time I went to Boncuk, so please be clear I really like the place. It is located sort of parallel to Istiklal Street and in the first time it took me a hard time finding it. This time it was easier. I suggest you write the address down and show to vendors on Istiklal and its side streets to help.
Food, as in the first time, was excellent. They have a "house special" cold appetizer that I believe it is some sort of fish on herbs that is delicious. I also suggest the cuz-cuz and the garlic yougurt. In fact, all cold appetizers I tried are fantastic. And, to be honest, I never got to order main courses, as the cold appetizers were plenty. Take care not to over order! Their salads are also very good, I recommend.
In regards to service, that is where I had twice a hard time. English is "spoken" only by 1 person, and hardly. The "best" tables were always reserved, no matter at what time. I noticed they always put women and/or young couples on the best tables. Me, solo, always on the worst possible.
The 1,5l mineral water was standard. As was bread and cheese (excellent!).
This last visit I sat next to the register and had a chance to watch an older man (the owner??) direct the service. despite no english, he was the only friendly one and offered me turkish coffee at the end (what never happened in my firts visit some months ago).

In regards to prices, the restaurant is not bad at all. Of course whan you are alone and "sampling" as I was, things tend to become more expensive. But cold appetizers range from TL 5 to TL 15, and main course around TL 50. As 1 TL is about the same as 1 R$ (brazilian real), I was able to compare easily and prices are a cheaper than at home (of course Brazil is not the standard of cheapness nowadays...). A couple can expect to spend some TL 80 + 10% without drinks (only the mimenarl water), which is about US$ 45.

Al in all, worth going for the excellent food.

“Mediocre food, bad music, lots of second-hand smoke”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2011

Spent an interminable Saturday night here with friends. Seated on hot, stuffy second floor, which became intolerable after everyone started lighting up. Huge amounts of mediocre mezes - definitely a triumph of quantity over quality - probably the worst mezes I had in two weeks in Turkey. The perfect place if you love imbibing raki to excess, listening to deafening and campy live music, and inhaling lots of second-hand smoke.
