“Something not quite right?”
Reviewed September 13, 2011

We had booked one night in this hotel as a stopover on our way home from Iran via Istanbul. We were pretty tired when we turned up only to learn that the hotel had cancelled our booking the day before. Apparently they had tried to email us (while we were in transit) that they wanted the pincode to our credit card. As we hadn't sent it to them, they had automatically cancelled our reservation which had been made almost three months in advance. Asking for a confidentia pincode and cancelling a reservation the day before is not acceptable so we think something funny was going on. Possibly they had someone wanting to stay longer than just one night or maybe someone was planning to abuse our credit card. Luckily the receptionist helped us to find another hotel just two minutes away. However, we would like to warn other travellers of this procedure. Do NOT give out your pincode to anyone as your bank will not cover the damages if your card is abused.

We booked this hotel through a travel agency and did not expect too much of it, but we were pleasantly surprised!
The hotel is very well situated. Although when we arrived it was already dark and the street looked a bit dodgy. But when we got to know where we were it wasn't at all.
The tram is very nearby and Sulthanamet district is only 3 stops away.

One of the big plus sides of this hotel is the lovely rooftop pool!!
it was so nice to cool off a little bit after walking around in 30 degrees all day!!

The rooms are also very nice. Not really big, but nice and clean and the bed was good!

Before we left, some people said it would be better to be in a hotel near Taksim Square but I was so glad we did not do that. We thought Taksim was not a nice neighbourhood at all!

Location is great. Located in Laleli which is a popular shopping area and very close to most popular tourist attractions. The tram station is 3 minutes walk and the Grand Bazaar is 10 minutes walk. Taxi stand is 50m from the hotel. The furniture is new and the beds are so comfortable. The breakfast is excellent. Fantastic selection of seasonal fresh fruits, cheeses and hot meals. My 2 year old son was having so much fun in the roof swimming pool. Everything was perfect and the Hotel staff were going out of their way to assist us. Best value for many and we will ONLY stay in this hotel in future.

Room Tip: Very spacious family rooms. New furniture and comfortable beds.

Although not the greatest hotel ever, we really enjoyed our stay here. it takes 5-10 mins n the tram to all the major sights, the breakfast is fresh and varied and there's a lovely roof terrace with a pool. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we had no problems during our stay. The only thing I would say that is a drawback is that taxi's cannot find this hotel very easily. Our room was a good size, but the bathroom is a bit small with a low ceiling above the shower so if you're a large tall man I wouldn't recommend this hotel! don't bother booking a shuttle with the hotel as taxi's to and from either aiport are much cheaper.

I stayed there with my husband for 4 days end of May / Early June. We requested a room with king size bed, we didnt get it, we had to change the next day for a room with a king size bed.
the Air conditioning was not working only fan mode, or actually the staff said they need to ask the manager's permission to turn the AC feature on as according to them its still not hot !!
the bathroom was really small.
They offered free wireless interenet in the rooms, which was in a quite good spped.
The reception man gave us the map of Istanbul in exchange of money, while as we later discovered it is for free .. that was not an appreciated attitude, I mean in Istanbul you should always expect people to rip you off and always try to bargain the prices, but we didnt expect that from the hotel and for a map !!!!!!
The breakfast was Okey, I liked the fruit salad , and the staff in the restaurant was nice and cheerful.
The Pool in the roof top is really tiny, I would not call it a pool (probably a big bath tub !) and the water did not look clean at all, so if you are interested in the swimming part then its not a good place, however the sun bathing part is good, and the view from there is nice.
the Only advantage of this hotel is the location, its in a popular shopping area, close to Beyazit bazar and not far from the attractions of the old city of Istanbul (Blue mosque, Topkapi palace...etc) its just a 10-15 min walking distance or 2 tram stops, however we could not find the hotel easily as its in some side street and we had to ask few times before we was able to find it
However, dont expect it to be a quite location.

This is the third year we have been back to this hotel, using it as a stopover for one or two nights on the way to and from Turkey to England. In the heart of the cosmopolitan Laleli district of Istanbul, with its many fashion, fur and leather shops, it is very conveniently situated - a 25 minute taxi-ride from the airport (also close to public transport from the airport and to other parts of the city - tramway and metro) and within 15 minutes walk through the Istanbul University district of Beyazit to the Grand Bazaar - 25 minutes walk from the hotel to Hagia Sophia and the Sultan Ahmet Mosque.
The modestly-sized rooms are clean and well fitted out for a hotel in this price bracket (I paid about 65$ a night this year for a room for two with breakfast) - the bathrooms (bath and shower) especially good. The open-buffet breakfast provides a very reasonable spread - some hot dishes as well as a good selection of cold, though the air conditioning in the breakfast room struggles a little in the height of summer (less of a problem in the hotel rooms). The terrace restaurant for other meals provides reasonable food at reasonable prices, as well as good views over the rooftops to the Marmara Sea - also a perfect place to have an evening cold beer. Also on the terrace is the small swimming pool - an excellent place to cool off after the summer city heat.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. Most do not speak much English, but the hotel manager does and would be very willing to help anyone who was having trouble communicating.
If you are looking for a conveniently placed hotel in Istanbul at a reasonable price, where you will be made to feel welcome, the Laleli Gonen Hotel should do you very well.
