Hotel Uzbekistan

Must say I like the look of the Hotel Uzbekistan, its soviet block look, its curves, and the way that it is set back from the streetscape to further accentuate its grandeur. As for the rooms they are pleasant, basic, and haven't had much love or attention since Nikita Khrushchev was in the Kremlin. Staff are a mixed lot and vary from friendly, chatty and helpful to I wouldn't know service culture if it bit me on the caboose. Hotel Uzbekistan is well located, near the subway and within walking distance to lots of Tashkent's landmarks. Laundry costs are steep ( buying new clothes in Tashkent's Chorsu Bazaar is cheaper!)

The room is spacious and clean. The buffet breakfast is great. Hotel staff is helpful. And the location of the hotel is right in the city centre. Around the hotel is a local kebab cafe - cheap local food - no English menu though, get ready to use Russian or tourist sign language :)

However, when I was there the hotel had no hot water for over a day - something to do with the "switching" of water supply. I am assuming this is an one off issue. Don't expect strong hot water pressure for shower neither, but this seem to be an issue with hotels everywhere in the whole country (I travelled to 4 locations within the country). Free Wi-Fi available in the room, but it was weak signal at times.

I would have given it more star if it wasn't for the hot water issue.

The staff very friendly and helpful. The rooms were large but could do with refurbishing. Andy enjoyed the breakfasts and they did cook eggs to order. The last night we stopped there the room was freezing as the municipality hadn't turned the heating. However, extra blankets or duvets were available.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper you might want to avoid a room that looks out on the bells. Apparently th...

... you nostalgic for dirty rooms and poor service standards which Hotel Uzbekistan was known during the Soviet era. It has not changed a bit. The experience that I wish to never happen again. From booking to greeting at the reception, to fighting to get a clean room, to trying to cheat on the bill by charging extra night stay. For $20-30 extra USD you can get a room at a hotel run by Western Management.

Room Tip: If you have to stay, make sure to get a room at a renovated floor.

I stayed in this hotel in October 2013 on vacation.

Good points: Perfect location, right in the centre of the city. Excellent breakfast buffet with lots of cuisine options available. Despite being built during Soviet times the hotel was well maintained with good quality rooms.

Bad points: The staff weren't very friendly but did speak good English.

uzbekistan hotel is like an old dowager: a place that has had a reputation when it first opened but now we consider it more than a bit seedy. the location is good, the facilities are not. some of the issues we had were: there was a major hole in the bathroom door (c. 18" sq), curtains were torn, bedsheets too, toilet paper holder was broken, no glasses in the bathroom. that's just to start. breakfast was plentiful, but lacked imagination: heavy emphasis on 'less healthy food', i.e. there's tons of meat, but fruit less so. the hotel caters to large tour groups i would barely give it 1 star, barely.

Stayed for one night at the start of a tour in a single room. Clearly not in the refurbished part of the hotel. Three power points didn't work, which took out two lamps and the TV, there were exposed wires in a couple of places, there was no water in the room even though you are advised not to drink the tap water. The room itself was small and shabby and just a bit depressing. The public areas are a bit grander. Breakfast was in a huge ballroom still set up for a big wedding the night before. The breakfast was quite good, with a lot of choice and even an omelette chef. A couple of the others in the group had eaten in the cafe at the hotel the night before and said it was a good meal with some reasonably priced French wine.
