“Big hotel, good location, would return”
Reviewed November 10, 2011

The location of this hotel is perfect... right in the middle of the city overlooking Amir Timur Square, a 5 minute walk to Broadway and with a metro stop right outside its front door. This was a much larger hotel than I had stayed at elsewhere in Uzbekistan, so didn't have the charm that a smaller place would have. It is a very busy hotel, and I was there the night of a wedding, which I could hear 14 floors up (though only for about an hour, as when the party moved into the ballroom, it was much more contained).
There's free wi-fi (which worked the majority of the time) and a working mini fridge. The free breakfast is decent.
Compared to some of the other hotels of this type in the city, I would return again based on the location.

Room Tip: Request a room facing the square. It has a great view, especially at sunset.

The only 2 good things about this hotel that come to mind are that it's location is bang in the heart of the city, overlooking the SQUARE and the Amir Timur Museum and statue, the second thing being that it has a very large lobby with high speed wifi for browsing the internet. The lobby being large, works well for large corporate or incentive groups who travel in hoards. Oh yes, the 3rd good thing being that they serve good, local dishes eg. the lagman, the shurpa and a very good club sandwich!!
However the overall experience, whether it was the the staff in the hotel, the awful stench of food streaming through each floor, the old school style of opening your room door with a lock and key, the lack of English being spoken, the very bare room, etc. left me with a very bad taste in the mouth, and reminded of how an old hotel would have been during the Communist regime.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone for sure, let alone coming back and staying here. My only piece of advise is to stay at this hotel, if you are on a shoe string budget and desperate!!

Room Tip: Ask for a city facing room and below or above the 5th floor.

I stayed here in early September as part of a tour. I had a very pretty room overlooking Amir Timur Square. The room was small, clean and comfortable. The blue cloth curtains and bed trim were very pretty. The fridge and airconditioning worked as did the TV. And the shower.

At the end of September I stayed here again at the end of the tour. The first room stank of smoke and had empty beer bottles placed behind the door. I was able to move to another room. A larger room on the opposite side of the building, with twin beds and a sitting area. But really odd electricals. The switch beside the door turned on all the lights in the room, including those by the bed, and that was the only switch to turn them off.

Others on my tour had problems with rooms including having one towel for two persons. I was glad I could loan from my twin room.

Breakfasts were plentiful. We ate in the restaurant one night and the dinner was ok and they served up the best strawberry icecream I've had. There is a coffee shop off the foyer selling drinks.

Its got a metro stop out the front and that will get you around town. If you are allowed to escape your group!

It is difficult to write a review for this hotel.

First the positives - great location (Amir Timur square) - if you're lucky to get a room facing the square then nothing like it. Staff is friendly enough. The rooms are neat, clean, and comfortable. And there are wedding parties every evening (so if you're travelling from outside Uzbekistan, it is a great way to see some well-heeled Tashkentians going for a wedding party).

But!

Yes there is a but. This hotel is also used for sex tourism. Groups of tourists come from outside Uzbekistan for their needs! So in the evening in the lobby of the hotel you'll see these 'tourists' and lots of prostitutes hanging around. Deals are finalised in the lobby itself.

So if you are ok with this unsavoury aspect, the hotel is great to stay at.

This shabby Soviet behemoth has clean, if very plain rooms with dated furnishings. If you want extras, like, say, a bath towel for each person in the room, you might be disappointed (depending on occupancy, they may not have enough to go around so you might have to make do with a threadbare hand-towel).
It is popular for wedding receptions, which a cacaphony of man-size horns most nights greeting the happy couple on their arrival, thumping dance music filtering upstairs half the night, and breakfast in the big hall the next morning amid the sagging decorations of the night before.
The woman in the lobby cafe generally found it extremely annoying that customers kept turning up and wanting to buy coffee and snacks; otherwise the hotel staff could be best described as indifferent - not friendly, not unfriendly -- except the bell boys who are very helpful.
But the location is good, the breakfast is okay, the room rates are cheap ... No serious complaints

I stayed 1 night in hotel Uzbekistan, early september 2011, during a package group tour.

The hotel is a huge sovjet style pompous building, one of several buildings around the Amur Timur square.

The interior also is sovjet style with huge lobby, and a ball room size dining room.

The room was extremely spacious. Clean, comfortable bed, working shower.
Reasonably good buffet breakfast, omelett made to order.
Coffee was weak instant coffe like everywhere else in Uzbekistan.

The hotel has a currencty exchange office, using, of cause, the official exchange rate.

Generally, the hotel is Ok, but nothing special.

Hotel Uzbekistan was the perfect hotel for my arrival in the country. It is a huge, Soviet monolith - which makes it very easy to find - and it is ideally located on Amir Timur square. it is a great base for exploring the city, whether walking or catching the metro which is next door. I thought the staff was very friendly. There is free wifi in the lobby. The breakfasts (included in the room price) are massive buffets of deliciousness - i hardly needed to eat for the rest of the day.
One downside is that is isn't cheap (by Uzbek standards it is quite expensive). I paid about $100/night, which was fine, but there are certainly places to stay that are much cheaper. The other downside is that the rooms are completely devoid of charm (think: Best Western or Ramada).
That said, i really enjoyed my stay there and would recommend it.
