Ashgabat is an interesting city, and full of restaurants. BUT BE CAREFUL - if you're accustomed to having a glass of wine with your dinner. We were four people on our first night in the city, and went to this recommended restaurant for the beginning of our Central Asian holiday. The menu came, with prices for all the items except the drinks. Foolishly we were all in a happy mood and didn't check out the price per glass of wine. We ordered two glasses of Georgian wine - they had none left - but offered Italian instead. The food was served after ages waiting (an hour!), and the plain, simple wine arrived as well.
At the end the bill also arrived. Take note (don't convert the currencies yet): total food for all 4 people - nice complete meal in all cases - 72 manat, or ca. 18 manat per person. Two glasses of mediocre open wine - 96 manat, or 48 manat each (or ca. 2.5 times the price of the full meal) which is US$16 per glass+10% - working out to $17.60 per glass of really mediocre wine.
And the service was extremely slow!
