My friend and I are going to Galle and we purchased ticket for the express train to Galle. There was some technical difficulty as the car won't open. It took them 30 minutes to get it together to realize that there was no power coming in that car.

A typical Indian railway station. For Europens must visit it to understand the local life style. Very crowded.
Nothin special compared to other asian train stations but worth seeing it if you haven't seen another one. The timetables are not electronic but wooden!!
Restrooms are seperate for men and women and foreigners. In general it is asian and colonialistic and exotic without beeing chaotic like some other railway station in this region.
You need a ticket to enter the station and see the platforms
Little in the way of train info boards and trains not often run on time but we bought tickets for Galle ok and got no hassle from anybody at the station or on the train.
One of the main down turns is the very discourteous staff from Ticket collectors to the booking office. They have forgotten that it is the "PASSENGER" whose fare pays them their salary. To them the passenger is a botheration. They glorify in the 8.30 to 4.30 job they do, like the man just mechanically issuing tickets, the person who announces train arrivals or departures merely stating a train is cancelled not bothering to inform what time the next train would be. It is a rudderless leaderless place with a station master who prefers to remain invisible.
Built by the British, so fairly functional and durable, but in need of upkeep. Could also do with (clearer) English signs and announcements and more food/drink stalls at all times of the day and night. Very clean though, compared to a lot of other stations in South Asia. Surrounding region has street markets that are worth a visit.
