having tried out the Ministry of Crab on my last trip to colombo i requested my host to suggest a more "local" crab place which wouldn't burn a hole in my forex wallet. His suggestion, Fat Crab, was just the doctor ordered! Happy to report it's a street corner away from Barefoot, and bang on the seafront.
i went upstairs and walked into what felt like i was in the Orient. no locals but everyone there with sideplates piled with leftovers of crabs. i ordered the moringa crab curry, tentatively ordering a medium crab. the waiter asked if i'd like the more expensive live crab, which turned out to be too large so i decided against it. Good i did because what i got was a healthy full crab that i struggled to finish. Into the meal, another person working there, Hashin, turned up and looked chatty so i questioned him about crab types, sizes, seasons, moon phases, etc. Very informative bright young boy!
the curry itself was very yummy though a trifle spicy even for me ( dont think saying "please make it less spicy" works, because they have the masala ready in the kitchen!) It mopped up well with the crusty fresh bread they gave as an option to boring rice. wonder what they do with leftover bread because i ate only two slices and they were giving everyone a full bread. maybe someone there has to perfect a bread&butter pudding there;)
all in all a memorable meal downed with the local Tiger beer. next time i'll order a less spicy garlic crab.
thankyou Fat Crab, thankyou Hashin.
