“Sprawling Wedding Hotel with Hapless Service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2011

We had to wait 45 minutes when we checked in because our room was ready. Little effort was made to make us feel comfortable during that time. And this after our three-wheeler from the train station (the only transport we could find there) was not allowed to approach the front door of the hotel because it competes with the hotel taxi service. We dragged our luggage up the long driveway dodging cars. Not an auspicious welcome.

We had a number of other problems at this hotel: we had to really fight for the non-smoking room we ordered, and ironically returned to the room to find someone had smoked a cigarette in it while we were gone (housekeeping?). At the bar by the pool, we ordered two margaritas during happy hour, our order was forgotten, and then we were billed peak-hour prices when the drinks arrived a half hour later. The public spaces of this hotel were dominated by weddings, which made one often feel like one was trespassing on someone else's party. Also, the cost of internet in the rooms was quite expensive.

On the other hand, we found hotel taxi to the airport helpful and timely. The room itself was quite nice and we got a good deal online. It's just too bad about the service.

Its true to its name, Grand .. u enter the hotel and you get all the right vibes ... The hotel has rooms in two wings - old and new, new ones are much better and feel more 5 star than the old ones ... they might trick you by telling tht the rooms in the old wing are premium ones and better than new, i got tricked into it but posting it so that no one else does .. inspite of booking 10 days in advance i had to wait for an hour that too at 6 pm for a check in and that with no king size beds available. So they tricked me by playin the premiun room in the old wing card .. Dont fall for it ... Apart from this everything else about the hotel is brilliant ... The food is good and extremelly cheap, you would wonder if thrz a printing mistake on their menu cards ... anyday better than hunting for cheap meals outside hotel ...

On arrival , we were shocked to see how large this hotel is, it has a very grand lobby area and attentive staff onhand. The bedrooms are very impressive - large, with a huge bed, desk and seating area and ours had a lovely view of the pool and river beyond. The bathroom was also of a very good size, modern with a big walk in shower which was VERY powerful.

The hotel had a nice pool which we didn't get to use as was only there for 1 day but looked very nice with sunbeds all around. There were several restaurants onsite including a great Sri Lankan one which is recommended in the Lonely Planet guide (it looked good) through the window - we were too late when we arrived, as it closed at 2.30pm! Gutted!

There is a great pub underneath the hotel, very busy showing sports on a big screen and there is the piano bar in the lobby which was is nice for a nightcap before hitting the sack.

We didn't get to venture very far during our short stay so I cannot comment much on the location but it appeared to be very close by to lots of amenities, port etc.

Would definitely revisit.

The first thing I noticed when I arrived was the people, there are so many of them milling around the lobby but it's not surprising as there are so few decent places to stay in Colombo, they are either 5 star luxury hotels or mediocre backpackers places, nothing for the 3* or 4* traveller.
It's also freezing inside the hotel, even if it's hot outside you'll find yourself needing a jumper or coat as you go between places.
Very good price for what you get and good facilities including 2 outdoor swimming pools and two gyms. A very popular place with international clientale, esp Indians and japanese.
Hotel has 14 restaurants, their main one serves all day buffets - the dinner is especially good with alot of choice, especially when it comes to desserts. Breakfast is also appealing - try the japanese fish and egg hoppers!
Sadly it's the other restaurants that let down the whole experience. I tried Chutney (Indian) ad Lagoon (seafood) both had terrible customer service and were London prices. Chutney serves Indian food, the menu sounds very impressive but the dishes are embarassing. It's like Indian fast food drenced in oil. Lagoon on the other hand is poorly manages and waiting times are ridiculous - i waited one hour for a soup for starters and all around me it was chaos. The fish itself was average and the inside sounds like a school canteen it's so loud but what's worst is the concept. You pick a fish and they cook it but as staff are disorganised you can be waiting ages to pick yours and you may end up paying alot if they don't tell you the price upfront. Avocado juice was nice though!
After travelling around sri lanka and staying in alot of different types of accommodation it was the perfect way to spend the last three days of my trip. I also had a spa treatment in very comfortable spa facilities and had the most heavenly hair treatment and head massage at Chagall's a hairdressers next door - highly recommended if the sun has dried out your hair!

Firstly, it must be said that most of the working staff were most pleasant and always eager to help, with a ready smile. This was the wonderful part. I am not convinced that the management at the hotel is as interested in service delivery, as I note from my experience at this hotel.

Based on year old reviews and family recommendations, we decided to book into this hotel, around March 2010, for our stay in Colombo during December.
On our arrival, we were definitely not prepared for the condition of the room, which was described as a premium room at a premium price. The Front Desk staff told us, even though we had requested a room with a view when we made our reservation, that none was available. Though on speaking with a manager we were surprised to find out that rooms with views were in fact available! This room was still unpleasant with dirty stained carpets and flooring, cupboard doors hanging off their hinges, mold in the bathroom caulking etc.
The next morning we checked a cheaper class of room in the hotel and was surprised to find out that it was more updated and in better shape.
We were moved again after much discussion with hotel management to the Executive floor. It was a pleasant upgrade, though this hotel needs to work harder to compete with hotels such as the W Hotel in Hong Kong, Gran Bahia Principe etc, in it's class.
I agree with the other reviews about the noise and activity in the lobby. We have stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe hotels in Jamaica and Mexico and were awestruck at the cleanliness and tranquility at hotel resorts as large as that. The lobby here is large but lacked any formality or ambiance that would be worthy of a 'star' hotel.
The hotel is in a great location if you like being near the city. The restaurants and gym were much better than expected.
This hotel is a good place to stay if considered as a possible 3 Star. Definitely not any higher than that.
The staff did help ease the issues we experienced and never hung around for a tip.
