We stayed at Lake Lodge Colombo for 4 days (17-21 December 2012) and it was marvellous. Initially, we felt it wasn't the best stay of accomodation along the trip, but as the couple days past, it certainly grew on us as one of the best accomodation we stayed at.
It is an English style lodge with approximately 12 rooms. The place is immaculately kept and the staff are very very friendly and quick to respond to requests and issues you may have. The lodge is staffed 24/7.
They have a fantastic set breaskfast menu for the mornings from which you may chose 1 of 3 options. (1 of the options you need to order the night before). They also have a broad menu for all day and night dining. We tried the menu for lunch on one day and the food was excellent.
The room is comfortable, although, be prepared for the entire room to be made of concrete, including wash basins, bed base and walls. To be quite honest, it didnt really effect our stay. It was still very comfortable. We were very satisfied witgh the room. Room cleaning does not occur at a set time throughout the day, so if you want your room cleaned and made up, it is best to advise the staff at the front entrance (don't think it will just happen). The entry to the room itself doesn't seem very private; you essentially walk a few steps into the eating area / lounge. Indeed, on a couple occasions, people in other rooms left their doors open and you could see into their rooms as you walked past. In this respect, privacy may be an issue for some stayers.
As for other reviews which discussed kitchen noise for down stair rooms, we didn't find the noise loud at all (remeber the walls are concrete) and we stayed in room 2 which was next to the kitchen.
A couple tips for getting to/from Lake Lodge -
> Some cabs / tuk tuks don't know where to go. The address is Alvis Terrance, Colombo 3. (I believe the suburb is pronounced "ku-llu-pittiya".
> A great cab company is Kangaroo Cabs. A trip with them includes 30 minutes of free wait time.
> It is very close to the main strip (Gaelle Road), beach and shops (including Paradise Road and Odel).
We would certainly return to Lake Lodge if we return to Colombo and reccomend it to you.
