Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Mount Lavinia Beach is located just out of the Colombo city. This beach strip has a lot to offer for the locals as well as the tourists visiting Colombo. Along the beach there are many nice restaurants pubs as well as relaxing areas. As a tourist who is visiting Colombo, Mount Lavinia Beach is a must visit. The weekends could be crowded with locals though, during the week it is relaxing and peaceful. If you would relax at a pool overlooking the ocean or the sunset, The Mount Lavinia Hotel terrace is recommended. You can use the Mount Lavinia Hotel pool for an affordable fee.

As the Galle Face Hotel decays into the past, Mount Lavinia Hotel has kept the past and the modern. Great location although quite a drive south of Colombo.
Great views from the verandah

“Celebrated a special occasion which was a perfect location.”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

My parents were celebrating 41 years of marriage whilst on their first overseas trip, so we chose to take them Mt Lavinia. We were a large group of 18 people and had the buffet. The hotel is beautiful and the views are amazing. The buffet had a great range of both Western and local food. The buffet cost 26,000 RS for adults and for 13,000 for children. The service was fantastic and it was a special evening.

“Sunny but seedy”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

This beachside area could be much better. When I visited the water was really dirty and the sand was full of rubbish., the cafes around are overpriced and too often full of rude staff, you get hassled almost non stop by either beggars or people trying to sell you stuff. Young children stand in front of you and try and sell you incense sticks, if you say no you get sworn at. The worst thing about the area is the seedy feeling you get especially around the railway tracks. I was even followed by creepy looking person - either wanting to sell me drugs or other more 'after 8' things.

“Home from Home”

The good old Mount Lavinia Hotel. The hotel maintains the colonial traditions of the British ruled Ceylon. Great place to stay, where the customer service at it's best. They are not just smiling faces, the staff are well trained to serve their guests. This is a very busy hotel, especially during the wedding season. Book well in advance. All the rooms face the Indian Ocean. They are clean right through out. They serve a great breakfast to wake up to. Room service is available.

it's near colombo, it may not be the best beach on the island but for its proximity to the city, its excellent.
