“Less than 30 minutes”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2014

When you look at the pictures and the reviews you feel it's a big buddhist temple and is a very interesting place. But it really couldn't stand upto it. My review is purely basis the experience of a tourist and should not be construed otherwise.

They have a museum with many ivory carvings and other stuff which is ok to see. a tall buddha statue (Possibly 30 feet) is a place of worship and glitters like gold. I sat here and is quite enchanting.

What I disliked is there are no English boards and no interesting trivia. I am of the view that this is not a tourist attraction and should not be projected this way. It's a temple where local visits.

“Tourist trap”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2014

If ever there was blatant misrepresentation if Buddhism then this is right up the list. More a business operation, tourist trap and animal cruelty all wrapped under a guise of Buddhism. The head monk plays a great double game pretending to be a caring person but is well know for extorting money from local businesses. The elephant is chained up all day for tourists to photograph. There is a growing trend of temples in Sri Lanka getting involved in the illegal capture and holding of elephants, many of which are not treated well, and this temple is in the forefront, aided and abetted by local politicians. It looks nice on the outside for an unsuspecting tourist but any money spent here is only aiding corruption and animal cruelty. Buddhism is found in the mind through peace, compassion and humility, not in gaudy and elaborate buildings with chained up elephants and collections of expensive antique cars (yes they have that as well here).

“Surprise visit”

Wonderful outside and wonderful inside. Met the head monk and had a nice conversation with him. He spared the time even though it was thd day before the wonderful festival procession complete with 54 elephants.

“Nice temple in the heart of the Colombo City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2014

One of the remarkable place of our Sri Lankan tour is Gangaramaya temple. It is very nice and quite place to relax your mind in the busy Colombo city. And the temple is fulled of stunning traditional arts. Specially, monks are very friendly and helpful. But there's a baby elephant who is tied-up with iron chains. It's very heart touching and we're wondering is this good for a nice temple like this..
