Interesting temple. As I arrived, groups of monks in their orange roads were being gathered up into cars to head somewhere else, so it was pretty quiet on this early morning. It was stuffed full of jewels, statutues and other gits in somewhat disarray. But I did enjoy having the chance to see it, except for the poor young elephant chained up out front who was pacing as much as he could on his very short leash and looked very distressed.

I visited this place and found several problems with it. Firstly, there is a young elephant chained up alone by two legs that looks very distressed and sways about constantly. Then, the compulsory entree fee doesn't seem to be enough as you then have to pay for shoes to be minded and other people ask you for money for things. The temple is full of ivory relics that are very distasteful and promote ivory (which is now banned in most countries) as 'beautiful'. This temple seems to promote wealth and status rather than mindfulness and fundamental buddhist teachings. All 6 of my friends that were with me at the time were also unimpressed.

only had a short time in Colombo and was recommended this temple by a local and it didn't dissapoint.

full of beautiful statues, shrines, buildings and carvings from several hundred years.

our english speaking guide showed us the many artifacts and explained the hisory of the people and places and was very helpful and watching the monks go about there work including building a hand powered hotel style lift was amazing !

i would reccomend this site for a insight into the culture and history of the monks

Probably the busiest of the temples I visited in Sri Lanka, it has more images, dagobas, etc and a huge collection of Buddhist images and treasures. Interesting but not particularly well marked. It is an active temple and may be difficult to make your way through all the various areas without disturbing worshipers.
