My husband and I have stayed at Hotel Renuka many times, its conveniant location, yummy Sri Lanka food, and great value for money means it is always our first choice when visiting SL. However this time we were both blown away by the new pool bar which just opened up in February 2013,

The view is unbelievable, it is actually shocking that you are right in the heart of Colombo because all you can see is the beautiful blue Indian Ocean. One of my favorite places to be in was in the new infinity pool which looks right out onto the Ocean, the white deck chairs, yummy cocktails, Sri Lankan bites and Ibiza tunes made hubby and I fall in love all over again.

The new gym which also faces the ocean is the best place to work out, I found myself hitting the gym more on this trip and my husband who is a fitness enthusiast was more than impressed with the gym facilities.

Bliss to me is sipping on a cocktail on the deck chairs at sunset, you really feel that you are in another world. After the sun goes down the pool bar still maintains its calm. Its the best place to wind down with a drink before heading out. The music, the cocktails, the sea breeze and the pretty lights around the pool create the perfect ambience.

My family and I have always loved Renuka hotel but the new pool bar has increased our impression. In two months we are going back to SL for a wedding and I can't wait to be back at that pool bar again.

This was booked as a bit of a treat on a final night of a travelling trip as we wanted a bit of luxury. We paid extra to have a deluxe room however on arrival they gave us a standard twin. We booked the hotel as the description stated all deluxe rooms had balconies and a sea view. After being put in a standard twin, (with a seaview only viewable by leaning over the side of the balcony) we requested to be moved. The staff member tried to say that we were in the correct room however I disagreed and showed him the hotel description and my booking confimation. He then moved us to a different room, in the 'new' block. This was interesting as it wasnt a simple stair climb or lift ride away but a couple of lift changes and a long walk. The 'deluxe' room was pretty much the same standard as a travel inn in the UK, for which i would have paid a third of the price, there was a sea view, however no balcony. Although the view of the sea was pretty cool the view from the side window was nothing more than a bunch of run down buildings.
We took a walk outside of the hotel to look and see if there were any rooms with a sea view and a balcony, as described, however we failed to see any.
The room was equipped with a kettle and tea/coffee making facilities as well as a fridge, which was not so cold. We were also given 2 complimentary bottles of water.
The bed was what can only be described as a giant cot. Every movement was heard due to the plastic sheeting that had been put down under the bed linen.
The rooftop pool was the saving grace for this hotel, however the staff are a little over bearing, a lot of 'sir' and 'madam' and 'namby, pambying' to things that didnt need any assistance.
The restaurant and reception toilets were situated in the 'old' building, however there was a large selction of food and drinks available and all at a reasonable price and the restaurant staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was included in the cost of the room, however an additional charge was added for a bottle of water. Food was available in a buffet style and also made to order. Alot of porters running around, opening doors, carrying bags, a little over whelming for anyone other than a princess!
Do NOT order a taxi through the hotel, they tried to charge us rs4000 as opposed to the rs2000 offer that was made from the taxi company directly opposite the building!

Room Tip: Make sure you get what you paid for!

The location was very convenient to all of Colombo's few good sights. Staff were helpful enough and overall it was decent value for money in comparison to other Colombo hotels. We really enjoyed the fresh tropical fruit that was provided as part of the buffet breakfast, which was very conveniently began at 6 am every day

We stayed in this hotel in Jabnuary 2013. We were very pleased with the comfort, cleanliness and service in this hotel. All the staff - from reception, doorman, bell boys and waiters were very plite and courteous, e.g. we reported a break in the toilet seat one morning and when we returned in the evening it has been replaced. Any request will be dealt a smile. It was also very convenient to trave in both directions from the door even though the traffic flow is one way on Galle road, the main road. The marine drive along the sea coast makes this possible. Nano taxi, Tuk-Tuk are readil available across the road. The food was very tasty with ample choice and variety for non-veg and vegetarians.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are more than adequate for a couple. The price is right!

We have just had a 4 night stay at Hotel Renuka. The staff were very helpful and friendly and efficient. Unfortunately the newest wing with pool and gym still was not not open despite the fact that it was completed - the front desk staff said that some paperwork with the authorities still had to be signed off before it could open. We requested a room away from Galle ave and could only obtain one with twin beds. The room was a good size, clean and with tea/coffee making facilities and room safe. The breakfast was fine with good service. We dined in house one night and enjoyed the very good Jaffna cuisine offered with the very helpful assistance of one of the staff in menu selection. The only criticism we have of this hotel is the absolutely dreadful pillows. They were without doubt, the worst we have ever encountered and gave us kneck and back ache the whole time we were there. The replacements we requested were just as bad as the originals. My suggestion to management is to throw them all out and invest in some better ones.

Room Tip: Anything away from Galle Ave is a must and preferably in the new wing. There appear to be a few new...

Looking for a reasonably priced hotel to stay in Colombo, we came up on Hotel Renuka in Kollupitiya. The hotel is well situated on the Galle Raod with ample public transport to the city.

The hotel seems to cater mostly to Indians. The choice of food is mostly Indian with a large selection of vegetarian foods. The food was actually very nice but a little pricey. The Swimming pool was under renovation, but this didn't matter to us. They charge you for wi-fi and the prices are quite steep. Buying a local sim card with a dongle is much cheaper and faster. This actually applies to most places in Sri Lanka.

Some of the restaurant staff were attentive, but many wern't. The house keeping department attends very slowly to your requests. The bed linen and towels were very clean and the room was clean too.

If you're looking for a mid-priced hotel not far away from Colombo, this might be the place. Don't expect too much and you'll be not disappointed.

We stayed in the new wing in a deluxe room which was really spacious. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The swimming pool was closed during our stay. Cleanliness of the rooms was a little poor with large areas of dust but the standard of the room was very good. I do think for the price they charge though you could find much better. Also drinks are very expensive. A can of diet coke was nearly £3 but there are plenty of shops nearby. There was no noise as the fitted doors and windows were insulated. Breakfast was very poor. I ordered a cooked breakfast and after 30 minutes waiting I walked out, it never came. Wifi is by voucher only and can work out expensive.

Room Tip: High floor new wing
