“Good City Centre Hotel with nice pool”

Hotel is centrally located and overlooks a lake which makes it feel less city-centre than it might. We stayed during a very busy period (new year) and the hotel was incredibly busy with holidaymakers, new year parties, weddings etc, so much so that the staff and systems were overwhelmed from time to time. for example we had to wait about 10 mins to get into the breakfast room one morning. There was always a queue at reception/check out.
Having said that, the pool area is lovely, and the pool is huge. There's a nice open air bar overlooking the lake. lots of convenient amenities - I had my hair cut at the salon in the basement for about £10 and a manicure for about the same price.

I find it difficult to fault anything about our stay at cinnamon lakeside. the rooms were very comfortable, not 5-star but a comfortable 4-star, and after arriving early in the morning from an overnight flight the staff were extremely helpful in arranging for our room to be ready a few hours early which was much appreciated. the breakfast buffet in the morning is excellent, there are several good restaurants to choose from that are reasonably priced and the pool situated out by the lake is wonderful. staff were all very friendly and contributed to a warm experience. it is not the cheapest hotel but was worth it in our experience.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 6th floor with a view over the pool and lake, which was excellent.

Stayed here in March 2012 and returned in for New Year. In March I mentioned that it was about time 5 star hotels provided free wifi. Whilst not claiming credit it was great to see this facility now exists. Well done.

On the other side of the coin they struggled with capacity demand. The place was heaving over Xmas and New Year and the hotel really struggled to deal with it. Despite booking over 6 months ago, and specifying the rooms we wanted, it was over one and half hours to check in, and we did not get what we wanted or had requested. It doesn't create a good impression if the solution to your problem becomes extra $ per night. Did they deliberately ignore your requirement to get you to pay more or am I just being cynical? No sign of the general manager during the chaos that is check in. Not good after a 12+ hour flight.

Non smoking floors and rooms are a joke. There is a small sign as you come out of the lift saying Non Smoking Floor. Most nationalities staying here are heavy smoking, probably miss or can't read the sign and ignore it if they can. The hotel needs to be more explicit about non smoking areas.

They need to get their CRM system working. Returning guests are not recognised or acknowledged. This is annoying and makes you question why you have returned. They need to understand preferences and find a way to accommodate them. If an airline has on line check in why can't an hotel?

On the plus side the staff are delightful and try to help. They recognise and remember you. The pool and the team there, led by Dias, are great.

It is a lovely city hotel that works well when not bursting at the gills. It struggles when busy and it needs to pay more attention to loyal customers.

Room Tip: Lakeside non smoking. 4th floor up.

We stayed for 2 nights (31 Dec and 1 Jan) - family of 4 with 2 superior lake view rooms booked. One of the worst hotels I have stayed in and I am not just talking about 5 stars here. Where shall I start - check in was terribly chaotic. We had booked New Year's dinner in advance but the check in person did not give us any information about it and I had to ask him about it. Then went to the rooms to find that one of the telephones wasn't working. Did not get my bags for 30 minutes, so had to call to remind them for the bags only to be asked what colour and how many bags we had! Then went down for the New Year dinner at 8.15 only to be told that they had booked a table for us at 7. Then was told that we would have to share a table with someone else which was fine with us. We were then led to another desk where the guy kept insisting that we had to pay for the dinner even after being told several times that I had paid for everything when I booked the hotel. Then after discussions among several members of staff, we were led to a table and joined the buffet. Extremely poor service with the waiters totally disinterested in serving. The whole place seemed liked a chaotic fish market with lots of staff members but none of them with a clue as to what was happening. Most of the staff seemed like trainees who were left to fend for themselves - rabbits in head lights is the gentlest phrase I can think of. Same inefficiency and ineptness continued the next morning at breakfast where I got someone else's coffee when I wanted tea and then the guy on the adjoining table got 2 coffees instead of one and a lady had to ask for tea 3 times!
Clearly I think this hotel is 5-star only because the decor is posh - the rest is very poor and I have experienced far better service even in simple B&Bs across the world. Really third class hotel rather than 5-star. I would really expect a refund for the money I paid as it was a truly shocking experience and completely ruined our New Year's eve.

Room Tip: Do not stay in this hotel.

Once I booked the hotel the receptionist was quick off the mark i.e. arrival was early and would I pay half board to check in early. I did check in early to be met with them asking me to pay full board, bearing in mind it was 9am and I had very tired family with me, got it reduced by half but this was hardly acceptable to pay US 90 for an extra 3 hours. When I landed in the airport and went to the washroom the chap working there looked like he won the lotto, he was over generous with the paper and asked me for any "english pounds", perhaps this was a sign of what was to come. Anyway back to the hotel, the breakfast was not included in the daily rate and I was disappointed in they did not have a high chair for a one year old, well they did have one but the strap was broke. I would say that the hotel's website does not reflect the hotel itself, the hotel rooms are tired with little touches to modernise the rooms, from the website the hotel pool looks impressive, the reality was different. The staff were friendly and helpful, although there are different restaurants themes there, the food choice was limited and was over cooked, I had beef at the Thai restaurant that was simply tasteless. There was a lot of weddings there and perhaps couples who just went there for the photo opportunity based on its location on the Beira Lake, some days it was overcrowded with weddings, there was definitely a few different couples. The hotel does not really cater for tourists there was little or no information on any excursions, perhaps they could lay on some transport to the nicer parts of Colombo. The lobby of the hotel was nice and they did lay on some music in the evenings, perhaps improvements can be made in the future, have to say Colombo is not the best place if you have a young family.

After checking out of the cinnamon grand and trying the galle face hotel we were wondering how on earth these hotels stay in business? But we had to stay somewhere so we tried the Lakeside and it was superb! The lobby manager Shamil took such good care of us it was refreshing to say the least. We were shown the rooms and given a good rate for our stay, we stayed on the club level and utilized the lounge every day, the staff was amazing in every way...it was like all the good hotel staff came to work here...rooms are excellent, wifi works!!
The improvements I would suggest: its extremely difficult to book a tennis court...I don't understand why but I literally had to call twice and show up to confirm my time, the tennis pro was very good but they whole process was cumbersome, the pool area needs to be frequented by servers that actually come around and ask you if you would like a drink of something, there are way too many people standing around doing Nothing...now I know labour is cheap but for gods sake do something...it makes me feel like half the staff at the pool is on vacation...
Overall again the staff other then at the pool are extremely friendly and hospitable...Great Place!!
(We stayed about 10 days total broken up into 2 segments)

It's been a while since we have stayed in a hotel and received such great service. Nayani greeted us at the reception and took us up to our suite, which was a nice touch.

Room service is great and dirt cheap, if only they knew what we paid for a cup of coffee in Perth. The quality of the food at the buffet is also excellent.

The gym and pool are great as well.

Every staff member seems willing to bend over backwards to help you.
