Be prepared to be overwhelmed with information and great artifacts in this museum. It is the sort of place that you should visit more than once and perhaps do one gallery each tome you go. There are some amazing Buddhist and Hindu artifacts contained in this museum and you will come away with an even more intense understanding of both religions/philosophies than you had before. There has been a lot of money poured into the exhibits by sponsors and this has obviously enhanced the museum. The building itself is a grand old edifice which needs some tender loving care.

Not the best museum I have ever seen, but still very good. It would have been nice to have a guide, but, the displays were fairly well signed in English and the museum was fairly extensive and a good introduction to Sri Lankan history. Unlike other reviewers, we found it quite clean. We were there when a large school was visiting which was both interesting and frustrating as they were quite noisy and boisterous but overall I'd not ruin the visit. We spent about 2 hours there and he highlight for us was the throne room.

The time of the day we went to visit the museum - there were less people and we fully enjoyed the experience of being ad-mist such rich culture and heritage of this beautiful island.

Although the artefacts are both beautiful and priceless, the museum appears to be ludicrously ill equipped to display these treasures. The displays are grimy and have the appearance of not being dusted regularly enough. The building is also dimly lit making it difficult to see two feet in front of your face. The staff appear to be comatose, instead of cleaning or educating the visitors about the artefacts they are content to sit and stare into space. I would like to suggest opening up a cafe (like the ones at the newly built racecourse) and a shop selling souvenirs to generate more revenue. Another pathetic facility are the toilets. The funny thing is that they are labelled "foreigners" and "locals", apparently the colonialists didn't leave the island. I would like to recommend the authorities to have clearly defined performance indicators (this should include high satisfaction of the visitors) for the museum director or expel the director and other responsible staff if these performance indicators are not met at the end of the year.
