Shiraz is a new restaurant with an elegant atmosphere. It is run by a kind and hospitable couple who give your meal a personal touch. This is likely the best meal my wife and I have had in Sri Lanka. We had the buffet (they plan to offer a la carte soon). But the buffet was more of just a set menu. It included several course: soup, pita with two dips, barbecue (2 pieces chicken, lamb kabab and a steak), then there was two kinds of rice and 3 dishes in red sauce.
The soup was hot with a good bit of spice, but pretty good. The next course was pita (which was good, but probably store bought) with two dips. One was roasted egg plant which had a strong smokey flavor. It was quite good. The other was a dill and zucchini dip. It was also quite good. I would have like it more if the dips were thicker like I am used to with hummus or baba ghanoush. The meat was incredible. Especially the lamb kabab, which had a rich flavor. The chicken had a good smoked flavor. The beef was a bit too tough in my opinion. The rice and other dishes were good, maybe not hot enough. I didn't really get a full account for their quality since I was so full by the time I ate them.
We also ordered a carrot cake which was moist and flavorful.
