We contacted the hotel directly and got a fantastic last minute price, so couldn't really complain!

The communal areas (the lobbby, reception, bar, pool, restaurants) are all great and 5* standard. The rooms are OK - but do smell pretty damp. We have actually stayed here on 2 occassions now - and the second time we got a smoking room - and it actually smelt better as it masked the smell of the dampness!!

It is a very convenient and good value for money place to stop overnight. If you are planning to spend a few days in Colombo, I would probably spend a bit more and stay elsewhere!

We recently stayed in this hotel. It has a good location and nice sea views but it is starting to fade. If you wanted a real 5 star hotel then I suggest the Hilton.

This was fine for cleanliness, food, service etc be prepared for taxi drivers who constantly want you to go on tour but I think that there is not many tourists so you are a target.

Do go to the House of Fashion and bring an empty suitcase to take back your purchases.

I did enjoy the hotel but I wouldn't rave about it! fantastic all body massage though.

It was certainly value for money in this case. The 70's decor and stale smell in the lifts & hallways were not pleasant. The cost of private cars must have gone up considerably since the last set of reviews were made because though many reviews within the last year state that a day will cost $25, its actually $40 - 45, even if you book directly with a driver. In fact, a full day outside of Colombo with a private car & driver, which included stops at the Pinawella Elephant Orphanage, Kandy (not much to see there), and the Botantical Garden, was $100 for the full day, not including the tip, when booked with the Continental Hotel. Unfortunately, the driver did not speak very good English either, so it was a rather challenging day. The location is on the water, which is nice, but the overall experience was nothing special.

I had read that this superbly situated hotel (between the Indian Ocean and the historic Fort and Pettah areas)was renowned for its service, and indeed it could not be faulted on this criterion. However, it is a hotel that needs attention if it is to retain its reputation.

The main problem is the size and quality of its single rooms. They are claustrophobically small. The are also in desperate need of refurbishment. The furniture is chipped and scatched, whilst the bedcovers are worn and bobbled. The bathroom had also seen better days.

The lobby and restataunts look as if they have been refurbished, and are of international standard.

The buffet restaurant was superb with excellent Sri Lankan food (and the usual "international" offerings).
The lunch buffet is particularly good value at 1000 rupees (£5.75)inclusive of taxes. Indeed, all prices are quoted inclusive of the 26% taxes, and are thoroughly reasonable. The bar also has a "buy 1 get one free" offer in the early evening and from 10pm to 11pm. The early bar closing time was annoying if, like me, you fancied a night cap after a night on the town!

Overall, a good but not outstanding hotel that needs money spending on it sooner rather than later. The service, however, could not be bettered and the staff were as attentive to the needs of an independent traveller as they were to business guests.

Stayed one night at the Continental, having travelled up from Bentota by train. Walking distance from the Railway Station (about 10 minutes). Arrived at approx 11 am and was shown directly to the room (although I think check-in is usually 2pm). Room very clean and welcoming. All usual facilities. All hotel staff extremely pleasant and cheerful. Location good, especially if you like to go for a walk along the Seafront in the evening after dinner. Meal in Indian Restaurant was excellent Highly recommended. Although we only stayed one night. It was a very good choice and would have no hesitation in returning. Staff were very helpful in recommending places to shop for specific items. Mainly a business hotel, but tourists are made very welcome.

I stayed in Continental hotel , Colombo 10 November 2004 - 14 November 2004 with my wife.

I travel to S.E. Asia, USA, and Europe, and Asia on average of 15 cities annually on work assignments, and leisure holidays.

Service was excellent from the doorman, it's limosine supply company Albans Travels and all staff we came across during our stay. The security men were very friendly. Food at Emeralds restaurant, and Tandoor restaurant was delicious although we found the food not too spicy.

The good experience resulted in us planning our next trip back to Colombo, and of course we'll stay in the Continental again.

This hotel is right in the city business district, but has a great outlook over the sea and along the Galle Green. It is an older 5 star hotel and whilst some of the furnishings have an older era look to them, they are infact comfortable and in most cases near new. The service in this hotel is outstanding - we have travelled all over the globe and stayed in many 5 star hotels, but the service at the Continental hotel is some of the best we have ever experienced, it more than makes up for the older style of decor. We stayed on the 9th floor which is the Club Level. We found the best currency to exchange at the front desk is USD$ or GBP/Euro - otherwise you will have to use a moneychanger outside the hotel. We ate in several of the restaurants, and room service and the food was excellent in all. The Spa is a bit of a let down - it is not really a "Spa" as I would know it, but the massage was good. The pool area is adequate - but nothing fancy and if you are there on holiday for more than 2 days and want to spend your time around the pool sunning yourself then possibly not the place for you. However if you are on business then this hotel is excellent and if you are on a 2-3 day stop-over then the location is perfect.
