The chapel gets its name from the breathtaking mural of the Transfiguration by renowned Sri Lankan artist David Paynter, who used as his models the workmen and worshippers present while he painted. It is this mural that captures one's attention on entering the chapel.
The chapel belongs to one of the most prestigious Anglican boys schools in the suburbs of Colombo, named after St. Thomas the apostle who is reputed to have visited Sri Lanka.
The foundation stone of the chapel was laid in 1923 by Anglican Bishop of Colombo the Rt. Revd. Copleston. Each Christmas, the Chapel has a carol service that is well patronised by old boys and many other worshippers.
