“Breathtaking mural of the Transfiguration”
Review of St. Thomas Chapel

Reviewed January 25, 2013

The chapel gets its name from the breathtaking mural of the Transfiguration by renowned Sri Lankan artist David Paynter, who used as his models the workmen and worshippers present while he painted. It is this mural that captures one's attention on entering the chapel.

The chapel belongs to one of the most prestigious Anglican boys schools in the suburbs of Colombo, named after St. Thomas the apostle who is reputed to have visited Sri Lanka.

The foundation stone of the chapel was laid in 1923 by Anglican Bishop of Colombo the Rt. Revd. Copleston. Each Christmas, the Chapel has a carol service that is well patronised by old boys and many other worshippers.

A rare mural of Christ ascending to heaven free from the cross
is inspiring. It depicts freedom from wrath.

It is a chapel within an iconic and famous school called S.Thomas College. One can liken it to Eton or Harrow. The school has produced six prime ministers of Sri Lanka! As most Private and Public Schools go, this one tops the list.

I dont think one can visit the chapel without prior approval of the Principal, as it is inside the premises of St Thomas' College. However, anyone can walk in on a Sunday for the service and walk around the garden as well. Although I am a Buddhist I liked sitting through the service as it seemed traditional and the choir was excellent.
