We stayed in this Taj based on prior business experience in other Taj hotels. It was not to the standard we expected. We found the public areas appeared to be fairly well maintained on the ground floor and the restaurant also appeared to be in quite good condition. However on venturing up to our room on the third floor saw us exit the lift to scruffy, dirty, stretched and in some spots, threadbare carpet. The doors and timber work were badly chipped and in need of repair. When we got,to our room, our key wouldn't work so the concierge had to go back downstairs to get a manual key to let us in. The electronic key was repaired the next day. The room was scruffy, with rotting timber in the bathroom and in the doorway onto our balcony. Some of the rotting timber had been painted over, only to be peeling off. The bathrooms were old with showers with curtains over old baths. Wifi was not included with the room and worked out to be 20.00 US per day. We found the service to be very good, and felt sorry for the staff who were working so hard at making our stay a good experience, in less than luxurious surroundings. The gymnasium however was one of the best equipped hotel gyms I have used.

We had a sea view room with balcony but there was no furniture on the balcony to sit on.

They informed us that they were closing the hotel in April for 2 years to do a complete renovation which does show that the group is responsive to their market. Particularly as they have a brand new Shangti La opening up next door. I would not recommend this hotel in its current state but would like to see it post renovation based on our experience with other Taj hotels.

Room Tip: Wait until its renovated and then book a room over looking the sea with a balcony

The hotel has it all to keep a family looked after and well rested. Great service, good food, a home away from home. But its not one of those modern hotels, you still get a 'key' to your room and it has all the other 'old' trimmings... But overall, nice place with great views of the Indian ocean.

We stopped here for one night as the first night of our honeymoon, so came straight from the airport. Staff were very welcoming on arrival and at check-in we were delighted to find out we had been upgraded to a suite. However, the "suite" was quite disappointing.

I should mention that everything was clean, we had been given complimentary wine and we had a sea view. But the suite appeared to just be three standard rooms linked up... We had a sparse main room, a bedroom and a huge dining table. Each room had a bathroom, but all the bathrooms were identical and all quite small and basic. I think you imagine a suite as having separate living and sleeping spaces and a nice big bathroom, where this was clearly just three rooms put together. the decor was a bit garish (purply pink bedding etc) and the rooms felt quite tired. Floors were very scuffed, it certainly wasn't luxurious. That being said, we appreciated the gesture of the upgrade.

There was a lovely pool (we didn't have time to use it), breakfast was a good spread and the staff in the bar were lovely. It's also right on Galle Face so nice spot for an evening walk along the front to watch the kite flyers.

It definitely had a corporate feel to the hotel. If you're looking for a luxury place to stay for several nights in Colombo, this isn't the place for you. But as a quick stopover it was fine and you couldn't fault the staff.

Room Tip: Front of hotel for sea view

I am pained to write this review as we have had memorable experience in Taj hotels.

This is an iconic hotel in Colombo. Having said that and the fact that it is part of Taj group made us book this hotel twice in last week of December 2012 - 22 Dec and 02 Jan - during Christmas/New year. We were disappointed that it did not give us "Taj" experience. Let me explain why.

Firstly the hotel looks old and aged. From the time you step into the reception - notice the wood panels and the faded joints at the floor level - you can feel that the group has not bothered to invest and upgrade this hotel. You will feel the same when you sit in the lounge or travel in the elevator. The worst is on the floor lobbies where the carpets are stained and blackened - especially in the corners. The wood work is old and doors are chipped. We stayed twice in the hotel once on seventh floor and again on fifth floor.

When we stayed on fifth floor - executive floor - we were expecting better. But the chipped door on the door connecting the sky bridge and the chipped table in executive lounge were shockers that we do not expect in a Taj. There was no Air conditioning on the floor lobbies of the hotel. I am not sure how much Taj is saving from this. We faced this on both floors we stayed in.

When the overall ambience of the hotel looks old, jaded and aged, it does not enthuse you at all. The rooms are business like. They are like any other business hotel. To substantiate the shabby condition of the interiors, i can give the example of unconnected gadget - was it smoke detector- inside the room we stayed.

(see pictures attached on the carpet condition, door, table and unconnected gadget in the room)

Coming to the staff, the biggest challenge is speaking in English. There is a need by Taj to invest in training the staff in speaking good english. I know that English is tough for Sinhalese but being a prominent hotel chain, Taj need to invest in training the team in good spoken english. At present, it is lacking. The team - whether they are in front office or executive lounge or travel desk - is poor in English which gets tougher while communicating with them.

We did not have a good experience while checking in for the first time on 22 Dec 2012. We had asked for an extra bed in the room which was confirmed over email by the executive handling reservations. When we arrived to check in, the front office executive was clueless in spite of us showing the printed copy of the email. We wasted half hour when the staff spent time going back and forth to check and confirm our request.

The location of the hotel is excellent. The biggest plus point is food which is excellent too. The TAJ Group somehow seems to have taken investing in and upgrading the hotel for granted. This looks an old and aging hotel and does not give an experience of staying in a "Taj" hotel.

I will not be recommending this hotel at the present state of affairs and rates as i don't see it as a value for money at present. We have stayed in other Taj properties and have had memorable experience. But not this.

I have conveyed the same to the Taj group in the feedback and hope they will invest and upgrade this hotel if they want to compete with increasing number of excellent boutique hotels in Colombo. With Shangri-La and Movenpick opening next dorrs in 2015, they will face tough times if they dont give facelift to the hotel.

Room Tip: I do not recommend the hotel at the present state of affairs and rates. It is no value for money.
