“In the process of becoming very good.”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

We had two rooms at this small hotel/guest house. The double was fully renovated tastefully with a particularly modern bathroom and although small was generally very nice. However we also had a triple in an annexe which was much less impressive. Although the bathroom was nice and the room very large the furniture in the room was very old and dated and looked to be items that had been deemed not good enough for the rest of the house. The kitchen was extremely basic.

This room rather lets down the rest of the house and the management is clearly rather embarrassed by it. Of course, they were not embarrassed enough not rent it out which is what they should do if they are concerned about poor reviews.

The location is quiet and just 15 minutes tuk tuk ride from the centre of Colombo. The breakfast, although not cheap, was pleasant.

Room Tip: Avoid the triple/family room until it is renovated.

Thank you for your review. What you are reffering to is a budget room given for very low cost and which is in a seperate old building. Appreciate your comments on the bathroom and comfort. Old antique furniture is purposely kept in that room as the room is in a heritage house and is one of the oldest remaining British houses in Colombo. I'm sorry that you were not able to appreciate its old charm.

With Blessings,

Manoji

We loved our stay here. Ereshha is a lovely host and really helpful. Books about Colombo and Sri Lanka itself. We got the tree top room which was lovely. Decor lovely and simple. Lovely Sri Lankan breakfast. A bit noisy at night with the dogs barking in the neighbourhood but funnily enough we still felt happy and relaxed.

The woman running this seemed to be very nice. The place is located about 15 mins from main centre in Colombo. The room was fine. Bathroom was good. The kitchen was not really in use. The main house is beautiful but we were in another house and the room was standard. Wifi good though. The only downside was arranging taxi for 3,000 rupees to airport with the lady and then the driver said for 300 extra he would bring us to airport via highway saving us 60 minutes. Would prefer if all of this was included when originally discussed.

Thank you for your review. The room you stayed was the Budget Room which has twin beds and is in a seperate building in the same compound. The building is one of the oldest remaining British houses in Colombo. It is given for low cost because it is old. I'm glad you felt comfortable in the room.
I'm sorry the driver has misled you about the time taken on normal road in comparison with the Expressway. We do not charge extra for toll as it is a very short distance and is only an option for the guest. It definitely does not save 60 minutes going on the expressway. The time difference is generally about 10 minutes.

Good and great was the experience of our stay at Highbury Colombo. It was neat and clean with all modern amenities, yet the feel was one of staying in a country side. Sumptuous breakfast and the last but not the least, plenty of books to read on varied subjects. The great smile and courteous nature of Ereshha will always be remembered.

We were initially only staying for 1 night but decided on 2 as we really enjoyed the calming atmosphere of the house and beautiful rooms. The decor was lovely and not over the top and very original and individual. Was nice to find such a quiet area and guest house in Colombo.

Lisa and I stayed in two rooms during our time, a downstairs room with an adjoining lounge and amazing bathroom; and the upstairs suite. Both rooms were great, with immaculate decor and added extras including fridges, kettles, etc to allow you to make yourself comfortable. We had breakfasts three times taking the Sri Lankan option. The best thing about this place is that it is family owned and run and the family will help you with anything you need. This was exactly what we were looking for as our purpose of travel was to get to know Sri Lanka and its culture. Highly recommended!

I spent my first two nights in Sri Lanka at the Highbury. I wasn't in the main house at the back of the property. I was in the front building, left of the main gate. My room was massive, with two double beds, the bathroom was brand new, which was great. So I was quite impressed when I first entered.

The kitchen, however, was pretty disgusting. I appreciated the fact that they provided a kettle and tea, but all cups and dishes were dirty, so were the kitchen cupboards. Not a nice sight at all.

I also would have preferred not to share with cockroaches. At some point, I saw four in the tiny kitchen. And they freak me out.

The location is good. You can easily get everywhere by tuk tuk and walk to Galle Face in 25 mins or so.

I wouldn't stay here again and am quite surprised by the enthusiastic reviews. Maybe they refer to rooms in the main building.

Thank you for your review. The room you stayed is not a part of our building . It is a budget room in the front building which is over 150 years old and also very large. We have only fully refurbished the bedroom and the bathroom and I appreciate your comments on the bedroom and bathroom. Taking into consideration your comments we have decided to close down the kitchen area till it is fully refurbished. Kitchen facilities were provided only as a convenience for guests especially with children. Please be assured that we will be selling only the Bedroom and the Bathroom .

Please do return to stay with us again for a brand new experience. We have only one budget room which is not a part of Highbury Colombo premises.
