Description: Ministry of Crab is nestled inside the oldest building in Colombo, the Old Dutch Hospital. It is a venture between Darshan Munidasa of Nihonbashi Japanese Restaurants in Colombo and Sri Lankan cricketing icons Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. The iconic Crabs that plate up in Singapore are available here. And some Crabs are over 2kg! If you want to enjoy the treasures of Sri Lankan waters, we are the only place!

The food at Ministry of Crab is simple and delicious. The menu is straightforward sea food dishes which I love, nothing too fancy. The pepper crab is to die for, just simply delicious. Accompany it with sticky rice and lime juice, yum yum! Only downside is it's a bit pricey but for good quality crab it's worth paying a little extra. I've also had the chocolate biscuit pudding made of incredibly rich Belgian chocolate. Simply delicious. Love the warm inviting decor of the restaurant and the open kitchen as well. Service can be a bit slow at the tables at the far end of the restaurant so recommend sitting closer to the entrance so you can get hold of a waiter much easily.

Conceptually, a truly unique restaurant in Sri Lanka. The drinks menu comes in a bottle which is quite fancy.
We ordered a XXL Chillie Crab and clay pot prawns.
Sadly, the Chillie crabs werent that nice. I've had much better Chillie Crabs in Singapore and for far less.
The Prawns were quite nice, and i thought it was ironic that we thought that the "prawns" tasted better than the crabs considering the fact that the restaurant is called the Ministry of "Crab" and not "prawn".
I dont think i'll go for the crabs here again,
Quite honestly, the Chillie crabs in Chinese 88 tastes far more better. Ofcourse you wont get an apron and a menu in a bottle, but it'll be half the price and will taste far better. I guarantee that.

We were on vacation in Sri Lanka and wanted to have the best meal while we were in Colombo. Was recommended by acquiantance that Ministry of Crab was just opened and a good bet for delicious crab.

Coming from Singapore, we've tasted good and sizeable Sri Lanka crab. We wanted to believe that the best and freshest is where it comes from!

Upon our arrival in Colombo, we immediately made a reservation to the restaurant. Undoubtedly, we ordered the largest crab for the night, a 2.2kg Sri Lankan crab.

Taste - the scent of the freshness is apparently in the crab meat.

$$$ - our criteria is freshness and size, we got it all, hence, the $$$ paid was well worth.

Ambience - Romantic setting especially when we arrived early and it was only 2 of us dining there before the crowd came along!

The owner, Darshan came to our table, had a good chat with him. Thanks for making our night special, Darshan.

On our final night in Colombo, we came back to the same restaurant for another treat before making our way home. Again, we return to the hotel satisfied, happy and wished we could have more....... Ministry of Crab, when will I see you in Singapore?

Food was exceptionally good. We ordered an OMG crab that had a weight of 2.2Kg. It was an absolute treat. Service also was very good. Ambiance was god as usual. Food is very pricy (approximately Rs 7,000/person) but nobody expects cheap food here.

But this restaurant has an attitude problem. Our reservation was for 7pm. We had a text message saying. “We confirm your reservation for the second seating at 7pm. We will hold the reservation till 7.15pm. However, we will need your table for the third seating at 9pm"

This attitude of needing the table back at 9pm is not acceptable for an upper class restaurant like MOC. The restaurant is having an ego trip and offending the customer even before arrival!

Also crab has to be eaten by hand. After the meal finger bowls (Sri Lankan style) were brought to wash the fingers. Once you indulge is such good crab using a finger bowl hardly cleans your fingers. When we inquired as to where we can was our hands we were sent to the common toilet of the Dutch Hospital where the washrooms did not even have soap. It would have been nice to have had a wash basin somewhere within the restaurant.

Once again an attitude problem of “My way or highway”!

Having said these bad things we will still go there again as their food is fantastic.

Dear Colombo Foodies

First of all thank you for writing about us on Trip Advisor Twice!. Your Comments are valuable to us and we do take every step to improve. When we opened in mid December, we could not cope with the demand and we had to have set sitting times in order to accomodate the many reservations while not putting too much pressure on service. But with 5 months in operation we have improved our ability and we are in the midst of changing the sitting system, so that a guest need not vacate their table at a certain time. Meanwhile we are changing the sms message reflecting the same.

Our largest Crab to date was an OMG!! at 2.6kg. We had two other instances where a crab exceeded 2kg and you are one of the lucky ones who was able to try this. I hope you enjoyed the crab and will be back for more. There are few more new dishes that will be introduced and we look forward to hearing your comments on these dishes.

I totally agree that the finger bowls with tea (to cut the oiliness), Venival traditional disinfectant) does not suffice to clean ones hands (especially when the crabs are huge). My apologies on behalf of our team member who directed you to the common wash rooms despite the fact that we have a sink on the left side of the kitchen for guests to wash hands. We are adding a further sink soon, please bear until this sink is put in place.

Again my apologies for this misdirection. We will improve and serve you better when you come back.

Gastronomically Yours
Dharshan Munidasa
