“Historical but uninspiring”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

Built in 1749 by the Dutch East India company although the Dutch Reformed Chruch dates back to the 1640s. Perviosuly hand-pumped, now motorised pipe organ. Grave stones around the outer perimeter of the church as well as inside. Helpful gentleman provided a tour of the church. Rps100 is requested donation. Fans strewn around the church (not operating) along with projector and loud religious music being played on the day we visited. A pale comparison to the much more beautiful Dutch Reformed Church in Galle. For directions, see my review of 'Old Town Hall'.

“Wonderful Church”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

Once set on a lot more land, the DRC at Wolvendaal is now "squeezed" into an odd shaped piece of land, traffic all around, that's progress i suppose. I visited on a very hot day (aren't they all in Colombo?) and it was some relief to go inside. Beautiful stained glass, headstones telling the history not only of the church, but Ceylon / Sri Lanka itself. Doesn't take long to get there, you don't have to spend oodles of time there, but well worth a visit. Photography is allowed, but be respectful, AND make sure you give a few Rs to help with up keep of the church please?

“Hidden history”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

I've been to this church twice, once for a wedding and the second time with Colombo City Walks. This is a very interesting church with old photographs, eerie grave markers of those who died of disease and walled up secret tunnels. There isn't much in the way of interpretive material so you really need a guide to get the best out of a visit here.

Reviewed November 6, 2012

It brings back the memories of good old colonisation of Dutch.. I have read meany books about dutch and british men ruling Sri Lanka... and how much they have influenced the culture and architecture of Sri Lanka.. and this is a living proof for the same~
