Galle Face Hotel Colombo
Ranked #5 of 54 Hotels in Colombo
Certificate of Excellence

I have stayed here many times along with virtually all the other main hotels in Colombo at various times. This in my opinion is the best for several reasons. OK it isn't five stars but is a wonderful old building with heaps of history and old world charm. The location is excellent with one of the largest and ' swimmer friendly' pools in Colombo. The gardens are beautiful and there is no better place to enjoy a cocktail as the sun goes down than outside near the sea. The food I would say is very good and the outdoor seating option is superb. Always a lot of activity with daily weddings which add to the charm. Not perfect though with the two wings ( modern and old style) which have significant differences in the quality of the accommodation. The old rooms are very spacious and some sit over the main hall used for weddings and can be noisy at night. The new wing is superb. A few faults but I would not hesitate to stay here.

We are from Canada and had heard about the hotel and decided to stay at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. We stayed for 2 weeks. The food had no variety, during the two weeks they had same menu in the dinner buffets at the Sea Spray and the other restaurant. They are over staffed but the service is very slow. You get a bad deal compared to what you pay. The prices of the dishes are too expensive when compared to similar hotels in Colombo. The rooms have a lovely view of the sea. We liked the view of hotel the best.

Thank you.

We stayed in the Galle Face (Regency wing) for the first and last night of our trip. We chose it as it's close to Negombo airport (cost 2600 rps arriving and 3200 leaving). We had a room on the 2nd floor with a balcony on arrival and it was fine, quite big and only negative a "musty" mothball type smell in the bathroom. The 2nd time (last weekend) we stayed on the 3rd floor (room 3024) and although smaller was much nicer, cleaner and had a more modern feel to it.

On both visits we found the staff great, the bar area and snack menu was good and although sometimes a little slow that's just the Sri Lankan way! A good choice for one or two days.

We loved this hotel. We stayed in the newer wing (the Regency) which was lovely. The rooms feel spacious and cool because of the high ceilings and are kept clean.

The pool is salt water and as warm as a bath. Staff are generally helpful and polite, although sometimes a little on the slow side. We waited over an hour for meals at times. There seem to be a lot of staff, but no one actually then takes responsibility for doing anything. Breakfast was super - we recommend starting the day with chilli omelette and potato curry.

While we were here we experienced the Cannonball Run which I think sums up this hotel perfectly. Basically it's a race between the British Ambassador and one other dignitary (this time the Canadian ambassador) along the hotel frontage to celebrate the time a cannonball was fired into the hotel's roof by accident some time in the 19th century. It's the type of idiosyncratic, odd tradition that does make this hotel special. Yes, the service is erratic. Yes, you do have to wait at times. But overall, it's an experience which is what travelling should be about.

We were here for the cricket test and the doormen do well to help you negotiate with taxi and tuk-tuk drivers. The location is superb. You can walk along the sea-front, there's a small beach, and you are near to shops. There's a good pub in the hotel complex and a gym to help you earn your beer. All in all this is the perfect place to explore Columbo from.

Room Tip: Book the newer wing - The Regency.

I love staying at Galle Face and always spend some time there when I visit Sri Lanka. The hotel is overflowing with character and the restaurant area is simply a stunning place to eat and look out over the ocean.
The location is good, with some nice shops close by and Galle Face Green just outside if you fancy a walk along the promenade.
On the downside, many of the rooms are old and tired and need updating. Especially the bathrooms. Sound travels, so try to get a room which is not above the wedding room (they have weddings at Galle Face all the time). Also, value for money is not so good anymore, since they put the prices up in the last couple of years.
Nevertheless, a lovely place to spend time and well worth a visit!!

Our first night in beautiful Sri Lanka and we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a room with a balcony plus spa, was a fantastic experience and only down side was we only had 1 night there.

The rest of the hotel did look a little tired, but the restaurants right on the water had great views - I found throughout Sri Lanka the hotel food not as good as expected but as with all of them a good range of things to choose from.

Overall would recommend as we had a great experience but there could be better.

Staying at a different hotel we wondered over to the Chequer Board Bar on recommendation.

Firstly it took several attempts to find the bar....no signage. Secondly, you had to walk through a restaurant to get to it and thirdly 3 coach parties!

The location was amazing. Right above the beach & the surf had been cleverly lite up.

Having been escorted to a table it took 30mins before the attendant returned for our order. It took a further 30 mins for two cocktails & a bowl if nuts to arrive! We considered a second but 45 mins passed before we saw another attendant & asked for the check! After another 30 mins had passed we got up & walked along the prom & came back to the bar to pay. The check hadn't even been prepared!

We missed dinner that evening due to wasted time, poor service & the coach tours which they are only interested in catering for with their cheap deals & I'll fitting attire!
