Description: In 1864 four British investors formed a company with the sole purpose of developing the Galle Face Hotel, destined to be lauded as the "finest hotel east of the Suez" Since that auspicious beginning, one hundred and fifty years ago, we have catered to the exacting standards of Monarchs, World leaders and Celebrities. The 1864 Restaurant and Wine Cellar have always been at the forefront of serving perfectly prepared modern European cuisine to our guests. We continue with this legacy today, offering gracious service, perfectly crafted dishes paired with an extensive sommelier selected wide variety of old and new world wines.

1864 is an extremely elegant restaurant in the Galle Face Hotel. The quality of the decor and furnishings are extremely good. At the present time this restaurant is being used as the main restaurant of the hotel whilst others are being refurbished. The breakfast buffet is superb with an incredible wide range of foods available. A lunchtime 'mini buffet' is provided where one has soup and salads and a choice of the offered main courses and evening a la carte is available. Service is professional and attentive. This place is recommended by us for the experience of dining in a room with elegant surroundings, plus good food and service.

This was our third visit to the Galle Face, the first over 17 years ago. The hotel is undergoing extensive repairs and renovation and we were aware of that when we booked, but even so, it has an an exceptional situation and we love the traditional, cossetted feel of the hotel. We had drinks at the pool bar and were rather shocked to have our tea made with tea-bags!!!

However, the definite spot was our dinner. The verandah restaurant was closed, so we ate our meal in the 1864 Restaurant. The meal was truely excellent and was part of our half-pension plan, so we did not choose the menu. We were an international group, French, Italian and English and all 'foodies' and honestly could not fault the menu and service. It was worthy of a starred French restaurant. So if you are discerning travellers, looking for au authentic Sri Lankan experience - go to the Galle Face. Smaller than it's bigger, modern neighbours, but you get so much more!

I have been to 1864 restaurant before, but this time we stumbled upon their lunch time buffet. Fantastic selection of starters!! You get the choice of starter & dessert buffet or starter & dessert buffet + main course (to chose from the menu).

3 times we went there, we chose the starter & dessert buffet (which includes delicious soups and a selection of bread). Nice deviation from hot rice and curry, also a chance to get our 5 a day (a bit hard to do in Colombo), fruit and veg.

We thought it was good value for money, considering the selection of starters and puddings you get. They had lovely Arabic mezze dishes such as Baba Ghanoush (Aubergine dip), it was fantastic. So was the Hommus. Get a seat in the alcove with a picture window, views towards the sea, perfect lunch time treat.

We had breakfast in this restaurant while staying at the Galle Face hotel and it was delicious and very reasonably priced. I tried pineapple the Sri Lankan way as suggested by one of the waiters.

We also had dinner there the same evening for my birthday and is was delicious. We also tried some Sri Lankan desserts which we really enjoyed. We were sat in a lovely alcove area overlooking the lawn and ocean.

On the following Saturday night we again dined there with our family after we returned from our Villa stay in Weligama.
The staff were very attentive, the menu had a lovely choice and the food again was delicious.
I would not hesitate to dine here again.

The food is amazing and the service by the excellently turned out staff is as always, brilliant. The food is excellent as is the environment. Always advisable to dress smartly but they did say I could go in wearing my shorts if I wanted. Try the devilled prawns or chicken. After all; spice is what Sri Lanka is known for.
