Never knew about this restaurant earlier....strolling by casually came across a pilawoos near the harbor area...we took a wild chance to try food from that place..for sure its not that very attractive from exterior...but pilawoos impressed us by its blends of spice...and we made sure to visit the place once again before we left colombo...fish roll and egg paratha could be a nice try!!

Pilawoos on 417 Galle Road has very good kotthus(fried roti with vegetables and other options). We read about them in Lonely Planet and had the vegetarian and chicken with cheese kotthus and both were very good as well as filling as we had the leftovers for lunch the next day. The kotthus prices range between 350 ruppees to 450 ruppees. When you first walk in, you will think they only sell hamburger like meals but walk into the restaurant and they will give you a menu which includes 15+ kotthu variations.

Pilla - as Pilawoos is known by us - the die hard fans - has always been an iconic 'street food joint' since our childhood. I am thrilled it is still there - and from the looks of it - thriving.

DON'T expect a gourmet meal - nor a classy ambience - it is best you stay in the car and eat, because if you go inside, you start thinking twice about what you put into your mouth !

Here are some things you MUST try :
1. The one everyone talks about - CHEESE KOTTU - has never failed to impress
2. Lesser known is the 'Pillawoos Special - egg roti, roast chicken, onions and an amazingly diving 'curry sauce' that lightly glazes the whole dish !
3. Ice Milo - THE BEST ICE MILO anywhere in the world - guaranteed !!!

My son who doesn't eat much never stuffs himself - apart from when we visit Pilla - a testimony to the fact that it truly is a great meal out (he is just 4 - and already a fan !)

Ate kotthu here after ten years, still tastes amazing. Now they have cheese kotthu. Better than regular kotthu. Wish they improved the atmosphere. I guess the whole point is to have the best kotthu in town, not atmosphere. Hope they keep going.

Pilawoos, the Colpetty branch has been an iconic late night street food attraction among Sri Lankans for decades. I am not sure how other "Pilawoos" branches relate to this one but this has been The Pilawoos to most of us as names are often copied here.

The egg roti cut up with spicy gravy and onions, the cheese/chicken kothu roti, string hopper kothu/biryani, iced milo and lime juice are some of the all time favorites served out of this restaurant. Am not sure of their secret to the taste and attraction but this restaurant has been a place most end up after a night out at the popular clubs, a party after party or simply a late night meet up.

Ordering from and being served in your car is the attraction of Pilawoos. This being the cynosure, they went on to do a facelift inside the restaurant. It is a notch upscale from the "shop" atmosphere it used to be but am not sure if it paid off. I personally feel they could focused on prompt service of drive by customers. Unless you knew this place from time immemorial, you could end up driving away based on initial impression of their service! Prices are higher now and am not sure if they have the same attraction they once enjoyed.

If you are sensitive to street food or questionable hygiene may disturb your health this is probably not your best bet. If you grew up with your feet in the dust, are seasoned with a smooth transition system dining under the stars or dining in the five star then you could appreciate Pilawoos.

Average rating given due to their scope creep on getting modern in the wrong areas instead of improving service of the loyal niche, i.e. drive in customers.
