This is Mongolia, if you come to this country, this is one of the stuff you need to see. The nature, the people and their way of life are something you wouldn't get anywhere else.

I loved the "Big Sky" of Mongolia. I had very big expectations for Terelj and was mostly disappointed. It is a "day trip" that is typically an all day proposition, if you also visit the Genghis Khan statue and museum along the way and go for a leisurely lunch.

The Park is poorly managed. There lacks respect for the environment perhaps best evidenced by the hodgepodge of hotels of weekend houses, Gers and other assorted tourist attractions. Its really tragic because this park is naturally beautiful and could be so much more.

It would be a wonderful thing if the U.S. would share there National Park expertise with these very charming people.

Its worth the visit but there really isn't that much to do.

I have visited this park several times from different directions.

On crossing Tuul River bridge at start of park and picnic area beside river is disgusting as Mongolians have piled trash beside every second tree, and the river is full of garage. Many Mongolians idea of a picnic and camping is to get drunk, sing very loud until late at night, stagger around being obnoxious, and leave garbage.on ground or in river. No public toilets, nor garbage buckets in park.

So, if you can get away from these areas it is quite beautiful.

A required stop for at least a day while in Mongolia is the Gorkhi Terelj National Park! There are several guides that will make the most of your time in the park, (it is not required, but due to the condition of the roads there, the insane drivers, along with farm animals that just wander the road, (there are no fences) I would not drive there myself).

There are several options of things to do, one of the biggest is enjoying the nature. But, there are other options; there is a Buddhist monastery on top of one of the hills. It is quite a climb, but well-worth the views. There is also (believe it or not) a golf course, hotels and restaurants. You can also pay to ride Mongolian horses, (which is about the size of a pony in the US) or camels. The park also hosts several souvenir shops, many along the roadway. There are several rock formations that are safe to climb. Also, make sure to get a picture of the "man reading a book."

Several visitors, (which I didn't) stay for several days at tourist camps, (living with the families in their gers - which is a camel tent) and living like the locals.

You should plan on spending at least a whole day here, if not several.

There is a small road tax, (500 MNT) which is about 28 cents USD.

A bit chilly and dusty that day - a normal Terelj spring day. The scenery gives you an impression of being in Planet Mars! Out of this world beauty.
