I'd highly recommend visiting Hustai National Park. I had a wonderful visit to this beautiful location and saw all kinds of animals; the highlight was the wild tahki. I did not stay in the ger camp (I heard expensive); my driver took me there and back to Ulaanbaatar in the same day. I visited in March, which meant cold but also completely free of other tourists. Highly recommend!
Stay in the Ger Camp and take advantage of the remote Steppe as you see wild life like no where else in the world. Start with the wild horses (the Takhi), our tour guide arranged for us to have a session with the Manager of Training and Research for the Park, Usukhuu Dorj. He explained the behavioral patterns of the the 400 wild horses (the largest population in the world). You can't get within 300 meters of them, but you can certainly get close enough to get a good sense of these unique animals. As there are not too many water sources for them, it is easy to track them down by time of day - they drink in the morning and night.
In addition to the horses, you see countless Marmots, Red Deer, White Tail Gazelles, Upland Buzzards, Saker Falcons, and Golden Eagles. All were easy to spot and photograph.
At night, walk up behind the Ger camp to see countless stars and truly feel infinitesimal on a cosmic level.
Highly recommended for an overnight visit. Stay in a ger camp in Hustai - the place is a great base for excursions into the park.
Just seeing the wild horses in Hustai Park was incredible and awesome!! The beauty and majesty of those animals is worth the trip. I saw several small and fascinating herds. I also saw deer, eagles, elk and other intriguing animals in the park. It was such a fulfilling experience.
We stayed overnight at a guest house next to the main ger camp at the entrance to the park (which was fully booked when we went in mid-October; other camps were closed for the season). Our guide said that maybe it was because it was October (she had only been during the summer), but we saw more horses from the road through the park than she had ever seen. It was amazing. At one point, we were standing in a field completely surrounded by horses, who were obviously used to seeing people. We also saw dozens of red deer. It was the beginning of their mating season, so the males were trumpeting and chasing each other off. One of the most incredible wildlife viewing experiences I've ever had. I recommend staying overnight, because you will see more wildlife in the early morning and evening hours. We were there in late afternoon/evening when we saw the most horses. We also could hear the wolves at night, though we didn't see any.
