The Soviet regime in Mongolia had destroyed most of UB's historical edifices and landmarks. Arguably one of the major remains of the pre-Soviet era. It's worth visiting if you are travelling to UB and the Museum of Bogd Khan in the compound is quite appealing. It's a mix between a Buddhist monastery and royal lavishness. If you are visiting the Zaisan memorial then you can take a one km walk from the foothills of the monument to reach the palace compound.

I have one issue, taking pictures they charge you a massive fee! Seriously?
Still i walked by this place daily while i was here, and I visited, I was under the impreasion pictures outside are ok, be warned.
Other than that. An impressive couple and what they did and started for Mongolia is worth learning about.
Wonderful art, good history, nice part of town. History important here.

Lots to see. Be sure to see winter palace to side of summer palace, which has lots of clothing and furniture, unlike the summer palace, which is more religious artifacts. Lots to take pictures of.

The white building on the right as you enter contains all sorts of treasures. Highlights are an extensive stuffed animal display, some lovely gifts given by heads of state, and the flashest ger in all of Mongolia - made from leopard skins.
The other buildings are parts of an old monastery containing religious artifacts. Don't forget to look up as some of the ceilings are beautifully decorated.
If you have limited time in Ulaanbaatar make sure you put this on your itinary, it was one of my favourite sites during my stay.

All kind of stuff that shows how wealthy man can be (not in a good sense) - a ger made of snow leopard skins was the most disgusting one!
