Went to Monet for a special event. The set menu read like one would expect for a high priced restaurant. Unfortunately there was a galactic gap between the actual food and written menu. I am not sure if it was expectations but the food was bad. Caprese salad was preset on the table, the fresh mozzarella died and went to cheese heaven. The grilled chicken while tender lacked any seasoning, sauce or skill in presentation, the beef entree sucked. A white wine sauce over the piece of shoe leather tough beef an assortment of half assed vegetables, what was the chef thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All together forget even coming here. The view through the finger print laden glass marvelous touch to an awful meal.

I thought that this restaurant would be great because of the high prices, but I was very disappointed. The Australian beef was not of very good quality. I would have preferred Japanese or American beef. The view is great, as it is on the 17th floor of Central Tower building. I got a laugh when I read one reviewer call it the Louis Vuitton building. My recommendation would be to have drinks in the Sky Lounge on the 17th floor and then go to another restaurant. The same company that owns the Grand Khaan Irish Pub also owns Monet, which explains why they have the same complacent staff at both locations. Good French food is hard to find anywhere, and up to now impossible to find in Ulaanbaatar. My advice is to stick to Indian food or Italian food in this city.

The views are great. Service is very efficient. Menu is well thought out, and should have something for everyone. And the wine list is quite good. Portions are good (not too large which noody needs) and he food quality is first rate. Would this be 5 stars in Paris? No, but for Mongolia, it's a treat.

Living in a city like Ulaanbaatar, you expect nice things to be less expensive than in a developed country. I guess Monet doesn't understand that. Although the food was no more than average compared to a comparable meal in the US or Europe, it was just as expensive or even more so. The view is fantastic for UB, so maybe that is what you are paying for. It is owned by MCS corporation, the owners of the Grand Khaan Irish Pub, so some of the problems you see there are also evident at this establishment. When I was there it had more than it's share of portly Ausralian miners (why are they always so fat), who probably live off of a big expense account. The average person would probably be better off eating at The Courtyard Restaurant on the 3rd floor or try eating at Le Triskell, just down the road.

Monet is a terrific experience in Ulan Bator.

Let's start with the view. It's on the 17th story of the Century Building in Ulan Bator with unobstructed views over the best areas of the city (e.g. Sukhbaatar Square). I took several pictures because the view was so fine, especially at sunset, and felt a little awkward until I realized that most of the other guests were doing the same. The decor is elegant and refined. This would be a great setting even if the food wasn't all that remarkable.

But it was. The two of us ordered, as entrees, the Mongolian lamb and the beef. Both were exceptional. The beef was savory and the seasoning of the lamb made the meal memorable. We also ordered appetizers (mushroom soup and chicken consommé) that were very good and desserts (basically a chocolate torte, and an almond/blueberry tort), that were all delicious.

The service was prompt and unobtrusive. As Americans, we have found the wait staff in China and Mongolia can be a little overly formal and stiff first, but if you give genuine compliments about the food you receive genuine gratitude in return. Our service was attentive without being intrusive, and they spoke English more than well enough to provide very good service. I very much liked the service.

The pricing in Mongolia is a little hard to follow for a westerner, but you can't blame that on this or any other restaurant. it takes over 1,300 Mongolian Tugriks for every U.S. dollar, so a $10 offering looks like a heart-attack inspiring 13,000 on the menu. The entrees, once you cut through the exchange rate, were very reasonable. Wine was expensive relative to what we would have paid in the states, but this is the result of government import tariffs, an experience we also had in China. At the end of the day, the total we paid was fair, but still it is startling to see that you have eaten a 6-figure meal, even if intellectually you know that the price is close to, and even a little bit below, what you would have paid at home. Bring a calculator or use the one on your smart phone to consider pricing - it turns out to be more than fair, but you be the judge.

We had no trouble making reservations on line through the restaurant's website.

Monet is a terrific place to have a special meal if you find yourself in Ulan Bator.
