This hotel is nothing special but it's ok. The staff is friendly but they almost don't speak any english. The breakfast was included in the price. rooms were clean and not to cold. Beds were a little bit hard but also nothing to cry about. Overall this hotel is good in a city like ulaanbaatar.

Stayed here on my way to the Gobi and then again on the way out. Room was clean. There was municipal work going on on the return, and the hot water was out in the whole building. After 2 weeks on the Steppe and in the Gobi without a shower, this could have been a huge bummer, but the staff gave us all (four people) access to the 4th floor spa, which has its own electric inline water heater in the showers. There was no WiFi, but a computer that could be used by guests for free. Breakfast was good. Not to far from the sights of the main square to walk.

A no-nonsense, no frills hotel. Very large rooms that are clean and tidy, but passed their used-by date. A good breakfast is included in the price which is always a bonus as is the free wifi in the lobby. The hotel were able to safely store our bags when we went away for a night. Despite the staff not having extensive English they were helpful and tried their best.
We were booked in here by the tourist information office and were happy with the location and price after having spent our first night in UB in a dire hostel. Overall our experience was positive and we would go back again.

Room Tip: Extremely hard beds! You can sit on the wide window ledges and watch the world go by!

This hotel was terrible. I was saddened because all of the things that made it so bad could be easily fixed.
After 22 hours of travel my father and I arrived at midnight on a Saturday to a receptionist who spoke no English. After failing to communicate to this receptionist we had a booking he went and woke up the manager. The manager spoke a very minimal amount of English but we finally managed to get our room.
We trudged up 4 flights of stairs and opened our door to room 404. Immediately we were assaulted by paint fumes and it's no wonder as there were an abundance of small and one large stains on the old carpet.
The room was dirty with dead bugs on the floor and when I opened a draw I found 4 empty beer cans from a prior guest! I was dieing for a shower, not caring if it was hot or cold. The pressure was very low but hey its Mongolia. However when I tried to position the shower head it fell off and It wouldn't go back on.
Tired and grumpy at the room I decided to just have a bottle of water and go to bed. However when I checked the promised mini bar the fridge was non functional and empty. This to me was a terrible stuff up, in a country where the tap water is undrinkable it is imperative that there is drinkable water in the room.
I just gave up and crawled into the rock hard bed and fell into a restless sleep. At 5:30am I was woken up by a very disgruntled father who had rolled over onto something hard and had found out he had slept with a lipstick and an (thankfully) unopened condom. Obviously the linen had not been changed from the previous guests which is absolutely disgusting in my opinion.
We went down to breakfast with low expectations and low spirits. The breakfast was yet again a disappointment, there was no plates and we had to ask, the eggs and bacon were cold, the yogurt had to be asked for and there was no toaster. The waiter didn't want to know us and was very slow to respond to requests.
This was our first night of a supposed 5 nights before we left on our tour so we bit the bullet and decided to move to the Ulaanbaatar Hotel which is a 5 star hotel but only cost $20 more a night!
Trying to get a refund was a nightmare and is still being worked out.
The reason it was so bad was the cost of the room and this is largely due to intrepid tacking on an extra $75 AUD on the room rate but even without that the problems are glaring and need to be addressed. It is not suitable for western tourists if they plan to charge what they do.

Room Tip: Do not book 404

This place is an inexpensive hotel in the third world. Don't expect to much.

More expensive than a guest house, but you get privacy and it's cheaper than most hotels in UB. The hot water works most of the time, the rooms are generally clean and the staff are friendly and generally helpful (but have limited English). The food isn't worth paying for, but there are plenty of good places to eat within 15 minutes walk.

It appears to be a very popular start and finish hotel for tour companies, with Intrepid and the local Gecko's agent using it.

I stayed at Zaluuchuud before and after a horse trekking trip in September (2 nights before and 2 nights after).

As has been noted by previous reviewers there are a lot of issues but at less than $35USD per night you can't expect that much. It should also be noted that all the guide books I read for Mongolia stated very clearly that the star rating system is unregulated therefore places can allocate whatever rating they like so I didn't place much stock in the 3 star rating of Zaluuchuud.

Hot Water - Ulaanbaatar has town wide hot water and with the strain on the system it is little wonder that sometimes it takes a long time for the water to run even luke warm. At Zaluuchuud this is easily overcome by requesting one of the rooms which has an in built water heater in the shower (check to see if there is a little white box attached to the shower fitting). The other way it can be overcome is by having your shower not a peak times - I found that hot water was usually available after 10pm and between 12pm - 4pm most days.

Staff - The staff speak very little english so it is advisable to learn a few key words before you go (shower, toilet, window, heating, broken, please fix, please clean and new room). With relatively little Mongolian and liberal use of miming you can make yourself understood. Despite the language barrier the staff were willing to help and all issues raised were addressed promptly.

Cleanliness - it pays to remember that you are staying in a relatively cheap hotel in a developing country that is only 20 years out from soviet rule. The standards are not what you would expect in Europe or much of the rest of Asia. The rooms I stayed in were all old and tired but clean. Some of the other rooms were not clean. If your room has not been cleaned simply ask them to do it again. It also pays to adhere to the basic rule of adventure travel - when in doubt, sleep in your sleeping bag liner.

Location - less than 10mins walk to the main square so it is hard to beat for location. It is also away from the worst of the pickpocketing around the State Department Store. That said don't get lazy as they do tend to target the hotels where western tourists stay. The area in general is safe enough and I didn't feel threatened walking the city as a single woman during the day or at night. I would advise carrying a torch as there are no street lights and the foot paths are a bit of an obstacle course.

Room Tip: Get a room with a water heater for guaranteed hot water
