I eat frequently at this very well-located (and French-owned) restaurant, and have only once been disappointed (with a special of the day that was non-French). My advice is to stick to the French classics and one cannot go wrong. The Chateaubriand is superb, as are the chips/fries that come with it; portions tend more to American quanities, it must be said. The green salad selection is likewise excellent, with delicious dressings, and desserts such as chocolate mousse or creme brulee can only be recommended. There is also a good selection of wines, offered at reasonable prices. In terms of ambience, it's more of a formal place, but versatile enough for business or family lunches (there is a children's menu). Pricewise it's not cheap, but for the quality on offer, one can not expect this. Definitely recommended.

Our whole group enjoyed the food so much that we went back a second time on our last night in UB. I've traveled to UB multiple times and was pleased to find the Le Bistro Francais on the most recent trip. It will be a "MUST" when I return again!

I try to like the French Bistro, I really do. Lots of people have given me lunch and dinner there. I have even invited people there to lunch myself, so it can’t be that bad. The décor is a bit brown, but with some authentic French touches. A small framed poster claims “Les Gens Chics Sont L’Hiver A Monte Carlo” (Smart People Winter in Monte Carlo). It can either amuse you or grate a bit in January when it is -35C outside. The terrace is a comfortable place to sit in summer.

As with a number of places in UB, the Bistro can do a decent steak. Many of the other dishes are disappointing for the price, even allowing for the need to import ingredients. The cooking has not recovered from the loss of a talented chef when he followed his partner to Papua New Guinea two years ago. The staff are friendly but not particularly attentive; they need training. Guy, the owner/manager, is polite enough if he likes you, but surly if he doesn’t.

The Bistro is a safe choice: dependable, but not exciting. Ambassadors without good cooks make block bookings with their visitors in summer. You can understand the menu. The dishes are more or less as described. There is a reasonable wine list. It is a French restaurant, after all. There are clean lavatories. That alone will bring in those in the expatriate community who do not mind paying a little more for a decent cup of coffee. But it needs an infusion of Gallic charm to raise its ratings.

Le Bistro Francais makes an excellent attempt at continental elegance, but the ambiance falls short. Maybe it was the cracking paint on the wall; maybe it was the stereo, CDs and TV stacked on a windowsill; maybe it was the flypaper hanging from a window handle--but something wasn't quite right. Maybe it was the fact that our table was jammed up against a piano.

The presentation of the food was excellent, and the first few bites were divine. I think this might be the first place I've been to in UB where they asked how I wanted my steak cooked. I know it's the first place where I've received one that actually had some pink in the center. The steak was accompanied by tasty vegetables and an exquisite scalloped potato dish. The food cooled quickly, though, and the taste disappeared with the heat.

The prices are more than double the average UB eatery, so beware. My 200 gram steak was one of the cheapest items on the menu at ₮13500. You might want to save it for a special occasion.

Le Bistro is an expat/business lunch hang out in UB. As most of the patrons are on expense accounts is overpriced. The quality of the food is inconsistent at best. Don't bother give an indication on how you want the meet cooked, the end result is always random.

Not everything is bad, the bistro decoration is nice and in the summer it has an attractive people watching covered area by the sidewalk. The bread (French baguettes) is good, salads are fresh and the espresso coffe is good.

Overall is a pass, unless you feel an urge for French food in UB.
