Chanthapanya Hotel
Ranked #22 of 93 Hotels in Vientiane
Reviewed December 14, 2013

The Chanthapanya Hotel promotes itself as a "Family Hotel". Well located across the road from the National Hall of Culture and within two blocks of the Mekong River. A definite cut above the many Backpacker Hostels. The room I had for a week was comfortable and clean. There was a bit of traffic noise early morning, but bearable.

The staff were friendly and very obliging. The free Wifi was appreciated.

The Hotel had a very reasonable breakfast of local food. Continental style food - fruit cheese, bread etc and if you really insisted the cooks could knock up some fried eggs and bacon I dont know though why people would bother.

Front of House proved to be good at fixing little problems and could quickly arrange transportation

For eating out just around the corner there are Lao (try Lao Kitchen) restaurants, little French style cafes and if for the junk food retards a pizza joint

Minor final rant why don't Western Hotels work out that independent travellers will look for free wifi when searching for accommodation? It seems to escape them that free wifi is a real inducement. Instead they try to stick it to you if they can.

Summation, I enjoyed my stay and when/if I come back to Lao PDR this place will be on my list to stay at

The exterior appearance of the hotel is quite inviting and lends an air of expectation which sadly our room did not meet. Our bathroom looked like it was straight from the 1970s but with a modern shower, perhaps it was a room yet to be upgraded but it was quite dirty and would be fairly easy to improve. We found out later that all the rooms are quite different. The pool was nice looking but never got a chance to use it as it shut quite early. Breakfast was quite average and on all the days we went had less than quality fruit products and we were not told that people can order proper meals as the breakfast staff were fairly unattentive. The location is also very average and not quite close to seeing anything other than the night market. It would be nicer staying a bit closer to the city.

Stayed here for 3 nights in August for a work trip. Rooms are a little dated and creaky but has everything you need. Toilets are newly renovated and comes with a rain shower. But note that the rooms facing the pool and gym can get a little noisy in the mornings. Breakfast was adequate. Convenient location and within walking distance to the river front and many cafes and restaurants.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool and gym can get a little noisy.

I stayed at this hotel recently and was very impressed overall.
Good points about the hotel:
- Good location, easy walk to the Mekong and shops
- Restaurants close by and mini marts
- Rooms of good size and nice basket of toiletries provided for in the bathroom. 2L bottles of free water provided each day also.

Not so good points:
- breakfast buffet is a bit ordinary if you like traditional, however they will cook some nice eggs for you upon request. Alternatively there are a couple of great French bakeries just down the road.
- Only two coat hangers in my wardrobe
- The bed at this hotel is extemely hard (some may think this is a good point but not for me).

There are a few other hotels going up in Vientiane around the place, more western style, but if you are looking for something nice and traditional this hotel is a great option.

This hotel is really lovely. The decor is traditional Lao-style with lots of carved wood, so the rooms are lovely. It's very close to the central part of the city and major tourist attractions. However, the staff are not friendly or particularly helpful - a really big let-down for Lao, where the people usually are a highlight!

Great location - central to just about everything.

Watch your bill - they tried to charge me for the mini-bar which I didn't use.

Laundry service is very good, but cheaper elsewhere

The room whilst clean to look at, STANK of old cigarette smoke, and when I got home my clothes all needed washing or airing to get it out.

The bathroom was a good size, but a bit damaged - missing tiles etc. Thoughtful little collection of things available for you to use - toothbrushes and paste, soap, shampoo/conditioner etc.

Lovely pool area. There is a gym too, but I didn't check that out.

Breakfast was OK. Avoid the cereal unless you see them opening a new packet, otherwise it's stale. Yoghurt is good, as it the bread.

Room Tip: Avoid room 209. Stale cigarette smoke smell, and was noisy at night
