“Run-down & Dull!”

I stayed 2 nights at the hotel for work. Definitely some works need to be done to the hotel. Service was okay, room has to be paid upfront during check-in. Big hotel but looks empty and old. Massage was okay, not the best, but quite a deal with 25% discount. Not a great location without transportation. Found a cockroach in the bathroom. The towels provided in the room were stained and old.

It's a nice hotel next to the meakong river with Some great views. However it's old and empty. The rooms are big and have everything that you would expect in a business class hotel but everything is old and shabby. Given the low occupancy the breakfast spread was surprisingly good. The hotel has only 1 restaurant and a bar. It's recently been taken over by a Chinese chain .

I recently made a booking for this hotel because i wanted some pampering and based on what they advertised on the hotel booking sights. I was going to get a 5 star hotel with all the trimmings balcony, flat screen TV, Cable, pool etc. The pictures of the two hot tubs and the sauna also looked appealing.

what was the experience...not the luxury pampering you expect from a 5 star hotel i have just recieved much better at a lovely 3 star in Siem Reap. The first thing to be noted was the lack of Balcony. When i contacted reception they said i had to pay extra. I pointed out the advertising on booking.com showed the room i booked as having a balcony, flat screen TV etc etc. I asked him to look at the website because i shouldn't have to pay more. Exentually he rang back to say the website was a mistake and they would upgrade me (how its an upgrade when it is what you booked and paid for i dont know)
What i was never able to find was the hot tubs and the sauna. every staff member i showed the images of the Don Chan Palace on booking.com said "no have". Another thing that they didn't have was a flat screen TV which i wouldnt have minded really if only they had Fox movies. The lovely cabel guide in the room had some movies on FOX movies i wouldn't have minded watching at night...sadly the engineer who came to the room wanted me to watch FOX sport...I am not interested in the remotest in watching sport...so pleased i booked 5 star at the Don Chan Palace..Not.

An excellent hotel, beautiful rooms. Stunningly located close to Mekong River and the river promenade. Fantastic breakfast buffee, whatever you want - you get it. Internet connections very good. Complimentary shuttle service to the city centre or whereever you want to go and pick up service as well. Very nice and helpful staff. I do recommend this hotel

Although the Don Chan is a bit removed from the wonderful chaos of Vientiane, the river walk to the action is not so very far and a great way to see what the locals are doing, biking, group outdoor exercises, family walks, etc. and a tuk tuk downtown is affordable and fun.
The room here is very comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the Mekong, dividing Thailand from Laos, and nice sitting area with all the fixings for a cup of tea in the afternoon. The beds and linens are superb, and the bathroom equally good.
The swimming pool is situated under an overhang, so in the shade most of the day, but a very welcome, quiet, relaxing patio after a day running around in the hub bub of busy Vientiane streets.
The breakfast buffet is adequate, varied, but nothing special.
We were disappointed at first by the location, but looking back I appreciate the quiet of the Don Chan Palace.

Room Tip: I would recommend asking for a room which overlooks the Mekong River which divides Thailand from Lao...

You see ads for this hotel all over town and in so many travel brochures in Laos. It is supposedly the tallest but probably dullest looking building in Vientiane. It really is an eyesore from a far. The room is large, clean, and nicely equipped. We had a room overlooking the Mekong river just across from Thailand so that was nice. The breakfast buffet is extensive though most look stale except for the noodle counter. The front desk staff try but obviously not trained to be efficient. Does it really take 4 rounds of asking to get to somebody who can check in?? Location is a bit off center but we enjoy our 15 min walk along the man-made water way before and after dinner. We got a great deal on hotel-club otherwise would not stay here.

This is an excellent hotel next to the Mekong River in Vientiane - Laos. The Hotel is
very clean, the rooms are large and well done with very nice bathrooms.
The staff are very friendly and enough cannot be said about them. This is the best
hotel in Vientiane at this time as far as I am concerned. I hear complaints about needing
to walk too far to get a public taxi, but if you cannot afford US$10. for a hotel taxi to just
about anywhere within city limits then you should stay home.
There is another new hotel being constructed a little further southeast along the river
and that will probably take first place when completed, but for now the Don Chan Palace
is the best place to stay. They also have an excellent buffet breakfast.
