Had a guide who filled us in on all the history. Think a guide is a must if you want to get an indepth understanding of the history and artifact significance.

We were really impressed by the efforts to set up and maintain this place. It is exactly what it says on the tin. It shows the history of Laos and it's people. Yes, there is probably a bit of propaganda thrown in. So what? That is a part of the history too!

It is housed in a splendid colonial style building on two floors. It is not air conditioned. The entry fee is peanuts and in any case this is not the Smithsonian!

The exhibits showing excavations and fossils is truly amazing! If one is to be critical, one could pick holes about the labelling of the exhibits and the descriptions not being in Queen's English. But hey ho, these amazing folk are rightly proud of their history and by all means, all power to them!

The only criticism is that we were unaware that the place shuts down at 1300 hours for lunch and reopens after an hour. This fact must be publicised. We used the opportunity to get a cold drink at the adjacent hotel restaurant Excellent idea for a very hot day!

I have no hesitation in recommending this place as a must see in Vientiane if you are interested in history .

The sad state of the Lao Museum is actually reflective of the state the country is in. From the fountain which didn't work at the entrance to the well worn displays, the neglected building is badly in need of repairs. Still worth a visit as you get to know what Laos has gone through and is going through. Left me wondering about the state of affairs in the governance and management as while it's true, they may be short of funds but there should be some responsibility in maintaining their displays which were dusty and in some cases falling off.
(our visit to the COPE centre was more rewarding)
There is a small entrance fee.

Lovely old colonial building but could do with a face lift. Some interesting exhibitions. An hour should be enough time.
