“Its under renovation and its quite nice!”
Reviewed January 8, 2009

For Laos, this is a pretty reasonable hotel.

Previous reviews didnt make sense when i read them :P but they were written awhile ago. But when we were staying there they were completing the last of the renovations.

The walls of the lobby and hallways are beautifully painted in lovely oriental artwork.

The room we stayed in was very beautiful and spacious, with wooden floors. We had cable television and air con.

The bathroom was reasonable and hot water which was good.

Buffet breakfast was awesome, had a lot of variety and changed everyday.

Location was good too, on one of the main roads. Same road as morning market and main shopping centre.

Staff were very friendly and very helpful, they gave us a map of the area and gave us some directions to main attractions.

This hotel was taiwanese owned. They have new owners and is now called Ramayana Gallery Hotel. Currently they are remodeling so it might be better afterwards.

So my writing is on the pre-remodeled rooms. My first room smelled like an ashtray so I requested a non-smoking room. The non-smoking room was better but it still smelled like smoke and had a weird FUNK. I ended up going to a convenience store to buy air freshener. yes, it was that bad. Everything in the rooms were pretty run down so don't have a high expectation.

The location is far from the river so I would not recommend this hotel for tourist. There are barely any restaurants around the hotel. They have KTV on the 2nd floor but you cannot go in for just a beer. They expect you to buy a bottle of something.

Breakfast was ok, but it is catered to chinese business travellers. They served bad chinese food including porridge, but they also had an omlette station. The business lounge has 2 PCs with internet access which is nice, but the connection is flaky at times.

When i went back to Vientiane after Vang Vieng, i ended up staying at the other Ramayana chain hotel called Inter City. It fared better. It has a cheaper rate and the riverfront location is much more convenient for tourists.

probably the worst place i have ever stayed but they would not give us a refund. The rooms are old and mouldy. the walls in the hotel are all buckled so you feel like the hotel will fall down!
the lamp shades are old and crocked the place is dirty.
Do not stay here it's very bad and to top it all off i think that there kareoke bar on the 2nd floor is a brothle!!!!!!!!!!!!
The shower and bath is only big enought to fit a hobbet.
and there are more mosquitos inside then outside. the pool is yuk. etc etc etc etc the only good thing is that it is close to the morning market and they have free internet which i am using to write this.

A 15 year old building that appears to have been poorly maintained since its constrcution. The staff could not show me a room with working air conditioning and all lights functioning after an hour of trying. None of the staff knew when the air condiitoners had last been serviced but the accumulated filth in them indicated a considerable time ago. I couldn't take these complaints up with the manager as the staff told me they could not contact him. As I left at around 07:00pm, the place was being infested by mosquitoes, so probably as much atttention is paid to pest control as to air conditioner maintenance. The place is not even conveniently situated for anything other than the Morning Market and Post office, it's about 25 to 30 minutes walk from the town centre. Hardly adds up to good value for your US$50+ per night, most of the Vientiane guest houses offer better value.

TV may not be important to some travellers, but the Royal Dok was the first place I've stayed in three months of touring SE Asia that didn't have a single English TV station. I received CNBC but without audio.

For 40 usd I found the Royal a tad high and too far of a walk late at night when returning from the main downtown area.

Carpets are way past needing replacement. Staff is polite and the noodle soup available with the free breakfast was good.

The hotel is very well located in Vientiane, close to the Monument. Everything OK, although nothing special to mention. We enjoyed the Morning Market, close from the hotel, where you can buy lots of traditional laotian handycrafts. Very cheap, but you have to bargain anyway! But it's even cheaper in Luang Prabang, if you are going there as well.
