“Beautiful temple”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

This was the only temple that was not destroyed in the city, so everything there is original. Admission is cheap for western standards. It worths the visit.

“Well worth seeing”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Now billed as a museum which means there's a 5,000 Kip entrance fee for foreigners. Still - it's well worth a visit: this was one of our favourite temples in Vientiane.

The cloister surrounding the main temple is particularly unusual and takes the Buddhist emphasis on repetition to an advanced level. It contains 1,000s of little niches, each containing a statue of a Buddha and is pretty mesmeric to walk around as a result. There's also a diplomatic reminder of the Siamese invasion in the 1828 with a portion of the cloister set aside for Buddhas broken by the 'foreigners' that year.

Inside the fading frescoes on the walls add an element of grandeur that most of the other temples of missing.
