“visit later in the day”
Reviewed July 7, 2014

I got up early to beat the heat, but the sun wasn't friendly for photographs. Not only is there a golden stupa, but a reclining buddha and a beautiful temple. Take a tuk-tuk as it is a fair walk!

“Beautiful Place!”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

I have lived in SE Asia for over 13 years, and have spent an extensive amount of time in Vientiane. I just got back from yet another visit, and went to visit Pha That Luang for probably about the 10th time. While the stupa looks as though it hasn't had a new coat of paint in the last 10 years or so, it's still a beautiful monument to visit. There is a beautiful green surrounding the stupa, which my 14-month-old absolutely loved running around in. The few staff that are there are smiling and friendly, and it's good to know that the very reasonable entrance fee goes to the upkeep of this ancient temple. Vientiane actually has very few historic places like this to visit, especially when compared to other cities in SE Asia such as Bangkok, Phnom Penh, or Yangon. If you're coming to Vientiane and enjoy temple hopping or cultural attractions, then this is a must-see. There is a huge festival here once a year, and thousands of Lao people from all over the countryside come to light candles and incense around the stupa, and walk around it 3 times. If you have the opportunity to visit at that time, you should check it out!

“OK...good to see”
Reviewed June 20, 2014

Good to see and get a picture here, but you can't go inside the temple just round the outside for 5000 kip. The temple is gold in all the photos but when you are up close its actualy really dirty and black. worth seeing since its one of only a few things to see in Vientiane

“Interesting experience”
Reviewed June 18, 2014

Since this is the national symbol of Laos I was expecting it to be crowded with tourist but was surprised that there were few other couples looking at the Pha That Luang and the nearby temple. Up close it wasn't all that exciting but an interesting piece of architecture.

“Cracking - but it needs a clean!”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Get a tuk tuk out and spend an hour or so here. It is very impressive to see as is all the other bits and bobs surrounding it. ie the reclining Buddha and a simply amazing portrait in the temple next to it. In fact all that surrounds it is impressive to see.

Get in take a closer look ,but its actually a bit underwhelming as it clearly needs just a darn good clean! Outside the complex you wouldnt notice but its very obvious up close. You would think the national monument would be deserving of a bit of a scrub up every now and then.

Anyway, its worth the trip and the tuk tuk trip is fun
