A short tuk-tuk ride from town, this stupa and the nearby museum are well worth a visit. Exit from the north gate and continue down the lane for some good food and a cold beer on a hot day.

This enormous stupa is the national symbol of Laos and quiet breathtaking. The square in front of it is a pleasant gathering place for the locals. The reclining Buddha next to but outside the stupa enclosure is also worth a look.

You need a taxi to see this, it is 3km from the centre of Vientiane in the North East suburbs. The gold central stupa is 45m high and sits prominently at the centre of a large parade ground. It represents the bud of a lotus flower. You can walk up a couple of terraces but the top terrace is reserved for monks. The gold exaggerates the heat from the sun and it gets pretty hot underfoot as you walk around barefoot. It is open 8-4pm closed for lunch noon-1, and closed every Monday.

We arrived at 4.05 pm while it closed at 4 pm but they let us in when we told them we were leaving the next day. It doesn't take long to look around but it's definitely a must see and the "face" of Vientiane. The kids were impressed as well by all the gold. Small entrance fee. Friendly staff!

This stupa is a symbol of Laos and deserves a visit. It is obviously a very sacred site. It is more impressive from a distance than up close, however.
