“Interesting mass of photographers & good photo opportunity.”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

Picturesque, good to have your photo in front of, and to see the views from the top. But that's about it. You'll only need 30 mins or so here.

The most interesting thing for me was the swarms of photographers that had filled the car park with their digital SLR's, then laptops and printers in the boot of the car - to give you an instant photograph. I wondered how many sales they got each in this age of digital photography. But how even a single sale per day must be worth it with such low wages and conditions in this post war country.

“The views and mosaics are worth the trip.”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

Walking distance from the centre if you feel fit - Lonely Planet includes it in their walking tour of Vientiane. Interesting history of what should be a runway. There are very boring bits of grey concrete contrasting with some very pretty mosaic work. The adjoining gardens are attractive. The climb up is easy and passes through areas of Tee shirt and souvenir sellers. The views from the top are worth the effort.

“Be sure to climb to the top or the view”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

This is the monument that was meant to be a runway. Glad they built this instead. Climb to the top via three floors of shopping opportunities. Some nice souvenirs here and the women are always ready to barter.

“looks impressive”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

The Lao's are very proud of this archway and it does have some good history, but given there is not much else to see and do in vientiane then this is must visit and there are great views from the top.
