“Great architecture”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

You must see this monument! No entrance fee required. But this is all history, and I got so immersed in it. Vientiane has so much history. Go bathe in it!

“A great trip in the city”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

This is a totally memorable place, even if (in agreement with other reviews) it is not totally amazing on its own. Think Arc de Triomphe but with tuk tuks whizzing around! Definitely worth the walk, especially considering that when you walk back South towards the Mekong, you are greeted with the sight of the Presidential Palace...a blend between The White House and Buckingham Palace.

“Views, photos, and souvenirs!”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

This is definitely something to see while you are in Vientiane! The views from the top are quite impressive, and you can see the whole city laid out before you. Architecturally, it's an interesting structure. Very brutalist yet also surprisingly striking. The souvenir shops on every single level had a vast array of things to pick from, and we did break down and make a few purchases.

We found it interesting that there was a large plaque in front of the fountain that sits before the monument. The plaque thanks China for its generous contributions towards construction of the fountain and the surrounding landscaping. However, we didn't notice any acknowledgement to the United States for the concrete used to make the monument itself! In fact, our tour guide seemed not to know that the materials used to build it were a gift from the U.S. intended to construct an airport. Got to love the selective writing of history. :-P

No elevator - be prepared for the stairs. That said, the retail therapy on the landings of each level break up the ascent, so it's not that bad.

“Must see in Vientiane, even if not that amazing”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

Its a landmark in Vientiane which makes this a must-see. Climb the stairs and see the city from higher up. There's a lot of souvenirs for sale inside the Patuxay, some of which are different from the usual stuff. Recommended.
