“Charming and peaceful but not on a Sunday!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2008

Recently spend 3 nights at the Settha Palace.

Wonderful 'old colonial 'style with spacious gardens/pool.

Bedrooms are spacious with good quality furniture. Bathrooms very clean.

Breakfast has good range of options although breakfast staff were very slow both in replenishing breakfast foods and clearing tables. Generally staff were a little disorganised throughout the hotel although on the postive side the entire hotel is absolutely spotless.

Poolside for 2 of the 3 days was lovely and peaceful with plenty of space. Unfortunately the hotel has a policy of opening up for Sunday 'brunch' to non- residents. Having arrived back at the hotel hot and in need of relaxation after 1/2 day sightseeing we were greeted with a scene of utter chaos with children running everywhere and all sun beds taken. A lap of the hotel pool proved impossible. The hotel had run out of pool towels and requests to staff for hotel towels were ignored. After sitting in reception for 15 min, eventually obtained some bedroom towels and we spend the remainder of the afternoon on upright chairs away from the pool area. Complaint to the general manager the following day resulted in an acknowledgement that they were completely overwhelmed by the numbers arriving although I was assured this was a 'one off'.

May be something to be aware of for anyone staying on a Sunday.

MY TRAVEL STYLE: I hate business hotels and strongly prefer resorts that resemble the Four Seasons, Aman, and Oberoi but try to find similar properties at lower cost. I seek out the “wow” experiences and I encourage you to view hotels I have stayed at and their respective reviews (by clicking on my name).

LOCATION: Good, not great. About a 7 minute walk to where most of the restaurants are located. No view of the river from this hotel. It's on a more quiet street than those that have views of the river.

BEST WAY TO GET THERE: Taxi from the Thai border is set at 300 Thai baht. 60k kip from our hotel TO the airport.

TYPE OF ROOM: Standard.

BED/SHEETS/PILLOW: Soft bed with nice but not luxurious linens. Towels were similar to ones I would use for the beach/pool. Pillow is thin and not down, but fine.

LIGHTING: Darker than would have preferred in the bathroom and bedroom but adequate.

BATHROOM/SHOWER: Beautiful with marble throughout. Shower appearance was a disappointment with a pre-made shower cubicle stuck in the corner of the bathroom. I saw a room at 2 other hotels at 1/3rd the price that didn’t have this. Also, the shower would spray everywhere since the connection for the rainshower must have not been very tight. On the plus side the water pressure was excellent but the hot water only lasts for about 7 minutes, then it gets warm for another 3 minutes, and then cool enough where it’s time to get out! Very smart water saving method, I guess.

TOILETRIES: Fine, but not spa quality

CLEANLINESS: Entire room is very clean.

A/C: Would get the room cold quickly if desired and a little on the loud side.

CLOSET SPACE: Average but a little small for 2 people to unpack all items.

STYLE OF ROOM: Old, classic style. Furniture is nice and antique-ish but not a “wow”.

QUIET/MORNING LIGHT: Room is very quiet but could hear a bar quite loudly up until about 11PM at night on a weekday.

FOOD: Breakfast was good but given that this is the best hotel in town, I was expecting more. Very basic and not a lot of selection.

TV/INTERNET: Internet is wireless in the hotel room. Hotel charges $6/hour when most other hotels that are a fraction of this price provide access at no charge.

SERVICE: Staff was always attentive, and friendly.

COMMON AREA: Pool area is nice and probably one of the nicest, if not the nicest, but still nothing special and nothing that made me “have” to jump in for a swim. I was expecting more from the hotel lobby and bar. Nice colonial style but I have seen better hotels with this style before (E&O Penang, Malaysia for example)

SUMMARY: Still probably the best option in town but would have liked to have seen the Green Boutique Hotel prior to saying it's definitely the best. Tried staying at a hotel on the river (InterCity, see my review), which was a disaster especially due to too much noise from traffic and other things. Happy we stayed here but I feel it's overpriced for what you get.

Settha Palace Hotel was a nice, clean, colonial-style hotel, close to the centre of Vientiane. Language was a bit of an issue, but it was nothing we couldn’t overcome. Expect mosquitoes in your room; bring a repellant device (we had a plug-in that seemed to work fine).

The city is small; all sights were within walking distance from the hotel. The breakfast wasn't spectacular, but was sufficient.

Overall, it was a comfortable hotel for the one day and night we were in Vientiane.

Happy travels.

We stayed here for 2 nights in December 2007 and wished we had stayed longer. What can I say about this hotel - superb decor, fantastic pool, great bar, great restaurant! Staying here was a highlight. It feels like Raffles (Singapore) on a smaller and more intimate scale. If you are going to Vientiane stay here!

I read the prior review on this hotel and it had alarmed me. However, we found the Settha Palace to be one of our favorite hotels. We have traveled through southeast Asia extensively and during this trip we often commented that we wished we could have moved the Settha Palace to our other destinations.

This is a beautiful, grand botique hotel of 26 rooms. Our room was splendid. Contrary to the prior post, our room had a lot of hanging space and we had plenty of hangers.(and I am one who requests extra hangers at every hotel I visited).

The room was immaculately clean and beautifully decorated. The bathroom was beautiful with a separate tub and shower. The bedding was wonderful and the pillows very comfortable. The room and the entire hotel were so clean that when you looked up at the ceiling or at the space between the floor and the wall, there was no dirt, no dust, no wall stains, no chipped paint.

The hotel lobby and dining room were elegant. The pool was marvelous. It truly was an oasis inside a very busy and noisy city. Sitting out by the pool we felt like we had our own resort. The water was clear and clean, the lunch we ordered was promptly delivered, tasted great and was set perfectly at a poolside table next to our loungers. There pool was never crowded and the service very good.

The staff was extremely friendly, opening doors, answering questions and providing suggestions on restaurants and massage places.

The service was very good but is not as high as say the level of the Raffles in Phnom Penh but our room price was the same at both of these hotels and the room at Settha Palace was far superior (we had a state room at Raffles and a Deluxe room at Settha Palace).

Breakfast was good. I wouldn't rate it as great but they made omelettes or other eggs delivered to your table, with sausage, bacon, ham, pastries, fruit etc. The dining room is quite elegant.

One draw back is they have terrible house wine. We would have spent more time in the lovely bar if we could have went in for a decent glass of wine before dinner or after returning for the night. They have a decent wine list if you want an entire bottle but there only house wine is very poor.

I would definitely stay here again. One of our favorite places. A great hotel.

  • Liked — The rooms, the cleanliness, the pool, the lobby, the dining room
  • Disliked — The house wine

settha palace hotel is not cheap but i would recommend it for several reasons. the building is a wonderfully renovated french colonial mansion. the location is in a very quiet though central street. the garden and pool areas are well kept and beautiful. rooms are extremely spacious with large bathrooms and all amenities. food in the elegant restaurant is very good varying between french and laotian, service is ok though a bit slow. buffet breakfast is good although not extraordinary. service is general is probably the only hotel's weak point: despite being smiling and corteous, staff speak very basic english and/or french, even the ones more supposed to be at customer contact as at the reception. this limitates communication and sometimes frustrates customers needs. a hotel of such a high standard should work more about this point. for the rest, highly recommended for anyone wishing to stay in a quiet, elegant place and willing to pay some extra dollars compared to other hotels in town.

  • Liked — elegant colonial building , large and clean rooms, quiet location, good food
  • Disliked — slowish service, very poor knowledge of english and/or french
