“The hotel missed the mark with a few genuine flaws”
Reviewed February 20, 2012

The Settha Palace is a lovely hotel set in a period property. But as others have stated here, it misses a top ranking for a few easy to solve reasons.

The hotel is in the northern centre of Vientiane, about 5 minutes from the National Museum and a bit further to the Wats and shops. The rooms are very well appointed (but starting to look a tiny bit dated), and the service is friendly and flawless. The hotel bar, and restaurant beyond, are refined yet simple. The pool area lacks the tropical lushness of comparable hotels, but the pool is massive and not overcrowded.

On this trip we stayed in 5 hotels in SE Asia that were in the same category as Settha Palace. All of them had free WiFi in the rooms, but at SP you have to pay: free access is only granted in the common areas. Similarly, they put a seal over the items in the minibar, which felt a bit mean and unneeded. I suppose if you have a Beerlao and then replace it they can still charge you for it. Finally, the breakfasts were a bit hit and miss (bananas would have been nice) and offered little in the way of local cuisine.

Vientiane is not the most exciting place to visit, but the huge number of Wats and vibrant street life makes it interesting for 2 days. Good luck.

Dear Mr. David,

We thank you for selecting Settha Palace Hotel to be part of your five selected hotels during your recent trip to South East Asia and for taking time to help us and all readers of tripadvisor to learn from your experience.

We are delighted to read the generally very encouraging feedback on our hotel and shall share such within our small family team as a kind of motivation, especially your remarks on the good service.

As for the pool side, we agree with your comments and are working to upgrade this location with new outdoor furniture and seat cushions. We are also improving the landscape lighting, so as to keep it soft & romantic.

As for the WIFI and the comments of the Min Bar, we are currently evaluating the possibilities with our head-office in Singapore. We are currently offering FREE WIFI at our main lobby, the bar, restaurant, pool side and side walk cafe.

We have spoken to Chef Ralf about the breakfast buffet and your fair request to include bananas and some local delights, which seems completely reasonable to us. Ralf is already exited in reviving his buffet just in time for your next visit.

Please let us thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you yet again to another visit at Settha Palace Hotel.

With best regards from all our team,

Andreas Bourdon

We spent 1 night here at the start of our Laos trip. Our stay did not get off to a good start as the hotel did not remember to collect us from the airport. After arrival and a longwinded explanation as to why this was we were finally shown our room. The room was very spacious and comfortable. The area round the pool was slightly shabby. The pool beds were uncomforable and I had to go hunting to staff to find towels. The snack food was nice as was the service. There is not a great deal to see or do in Vientiane so for us 2 days was sufficient. The hotel transferred us the next day to the airport free of charge to compensate for the previous confusion. We did not find there to be a great deal of choice of top hotels in the area hence why we booked here and it was fine for one night. However, it is easy to get a prepaid taxi from the airport and be very careful when you are paying when you leave as they have since charged, credited, charged our credit card as their machine wasn't working properly when we left. They obviously have no idea what they are doing!

We thank you for selecting Settha Palace Hotel for your recent stay in Vientiane and yes, you are probably right, we enjoy a reputation to be among the best hotels in Laos. We are glad that overall you enjoyed your stay and note that besides our personal apology and the free limousine back to the airport, you were still not satisfied with our oversight in picking you up. Once more, please accept our sincere apologies. As for the pool towels, we have revised the procedure and will have a full time staff out there to take care. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and the readers of tripadvisor. We hope to welcome you back soon for a better stay!

The Settha Palace is a very good hotel to stay in Vientiane. The room was big and the beds very comfy. The location is good for walking around in Vientiane. The best of the hotel is the restaurant (with open air seating) with excellent cuisine from a German chef. We liked it and can recommend this hotel for one or two nights but the hotel could use more of its colonial heritage and lacks at the moment atmosphere and the final touch in order to be rated outstanding.

Dear Ms Doffa,

We thank you for selecting Settha Palace Hotel for your recent stay in the Laos capital. We are glad to learn that you have enjoyed our hotel, services and the delicacies of Chaf Ralf, which comes as wonderful news. Being aware that the hotel requires further fine tuning was the reason for my recent arrival and we have prepared long lists of things to be done in order for Settha Palace to remain in the leading league of hotels for Laos. We are so confident that you will notice more touches and a higher level of personalized service you deserve for your coming visit. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Kind Regards,

Andreas & TEAM

We only stayed 1 night in this lovely, peaceful and relaxing hotel but we did stay in one of their very spacious suites, which was lovely! The hotel is in a beautiful colonial building and has everything one could wish for. The breakfast was excellent too. Location was good - a short wok into the centre of the city.

We thank you for staying with us at Settha Palace Hotel and are delighted to read about your overall positive impression, knowing all too well that your favorite city is Paris and you do compare our colonial boutique hotel with only the finest establishments in the French metropolitan capital. Also coming from Sidney and having seen the best of Australian hospitality makes us feel deeply honored to receive your kind appreciation. We sincerely hope to welcome you back soon for another stay at Vientiane's leading boutique style hotel. Warm regards, Andreas Bourdon

if you have to go to Vientiane (which has extremely little to offer) then make the Settha Palace your home away from home. Nice transformed mansion, with a distinct colonial feelings, friendly staff, well equipped rooms, pretty garden and pool, good restaurant. A peacuful place (in a sleepy town).

THis is definitely the best hotel in Vientiane. It is a small, old, very code hotel with very friendly staff members.
We went to Vientiane for a long weekend and this hotel was just the hotel we were looking for. As said before the small colonial hotel take you back in time for some 100 years. The rooms are very neat and clean with all modern facilities done in a endurable fashion. Lovely hotel.

Room Tip: All room are perfect !!
