Lao Plaza Hotel
Ranked #19 of 93 Hotels in Vientiane
Reviewed October 20, 2012

Face-lift will not be such a bad idea for Lao Plaza. For the rate they charged me with, I would expect a newer - hotel with a fresher look. The room and bathroom was clean, but I would say that their almost-edwardian furniture was not neatly preserved enough to be called vintage, and they might as well consider replacing them.

It was also too bad that I had to pay LAK100.000 per day (equivalent to USD13) for an unlimited in-room internet access. I would normally expect that a hotel with the size of Lao Plaza would already provide this complimentary as part of their facilities.

The staffs on the other hand were super friendly and helpful, they would know you by names which is one of the superficial hotel values I favor. When I mentioned staffs, I meant all of them - the chauffeur collecting me from airport, front desk agent, housekeeping staff, everyone was friendly. And most of them speak English too, good for me as I then didn't feel lost in translation.

Location wise, the hotel was great. Arriving Sunday morning in Vientiane while my business meetings didn't start until Monday, I took time to wander around the nearby surroundings and found that the hotel was only 15 minutes walking from Mekong river! There is an evening market open everyday by the river, and it was a good spot for souvenir shopping - they sold some pretty cheap good-quality Sinhs (Lao skirt fabric).

Food in the hotel was OK, typical hotel breakfast and menu for room service. But I did try their spicy papaya salad, and finding it quite refreshing (careful, it's hot!).

They have quite a complete gym equipment set despite the small gym area. At least 4 treadmills as far as I remembered.

Just came back after another week in this hotel. We had an event and brought $1000s to this place. My upgraded room was musty, and the bathroom had mold. Many of the staff do not understand English and at breakfast the manager has a poor attitude and blames it on the staff. Smoking all over. Overall poor customer service in this place. looking forward to the new Thai build hotel in the future.

My husband and I stayed in this Hotel for 7 nights in August and found the staff to be extremely helpful, the rooms were spacious and very comfortable, the pool was great, breakfast was the best we had in Laos. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. There is a mini market, atm and a wine shop in close proximity as well as numerous good restaurants.

I booked this hotel for 2 night for work. It is located in the center of Vientiane on its main road and within walking distance of many excellent restaurants. The room was appointed well and clean. There is a bit of staffs didn't understand English well. Breakfast was very good. The pool was under repair and it was noisy, dusty and hot in the cafe. And the drinks are overpriced. Generally not match the fire-star.

First time to Laos and not sure what to expect. Trip amazing.
Staff and facilities amazing and unusually for a hotel, it has a well appointed gym.

Food very good and safe. Even the salad and ice cubes don't have any issues. Very surprised. Breakfast is average.

You can exchange dollars for Kip at the hotel although exchnge rate isn't briliant.

Extensive security but didn't feel unsafe. Superb.

You can't bring your own food into the hotel but there are plenty of restaurants within a 5 minute walk. It is safe to walk to them.Food is good and steak house superb.

Make sure if you ask for chilis that you like hot chili. Not for the faint hearted.

Golden Stupa temple worth a visit.

Felt safe walking the streets.
Always haggle with the prices.

Travellers should keep two pasports photos with them incase of entry requirements. Business UK.

Room Tip: 5th floor overlooking pool area. Ask for a view from the room and staff happy to help.

I booked into stay i this hotel for 2 nights, the beginning of a fortnights hoilday. I had been told Laos people were very freindly. Unfortunately the staff at this hotel were disappointing in that respect! They did their job ok but didn't look like they wanted to be there really.
Having said that, the rooms were quite small and cramped (there were 3 of us) but the location was good enough. The internet had to be paid for (unusual in Asia) and the breakfast was reasonable.
The pillows promised to be excellent and were a big disappointment!
However, in a city with a lot of accomodation and much of it very reasonably priced I would recommend going cheaper and finding your own breakfast if necessary. Taxis are so cheap it wouldn't matter if it was not so central.
I prepaid for a room with disabled facilities and was told on arrival that it was being used - that is not good enough.

The Lao Plaza Hotel is located in the center of Vientiane on its main road and within walking distance of many excellent restaurants and almost directly across the street from two western chains – Swenson’s Ice Cream and the Pizza Company, both of which are consistently busy. The rooms, although a bit outdated, are well maintained and typically clean. Internet service can be obtained at an extra cost (or included in a higher-priced room). The buffet breakfast is excellent and provides many choices of Asian and western food. I have stayed at the Lao Plaza four times over the past few years and have found the staff to be consistently friendly and helpful. The hotel provides free shuttle service to and from the airport, so be sure to let the hotel know when you are arriving. If you do, there will be someone to meet you and help you with your luggage upon arrival.

Room Tip: Be sure to visit Carol Cassidy's Lao Textiles, which is behind the national theater and about a...
