Great place to be with you family & friends, good food & great view.... one of the best places to see sunset sipping a cold beer, but can get real busy on week ends so reserve before you go !

Did not reserve table. Very busy place and dark. As a result i fell off a short flight of steps and sprained my ankle! There goes my intended walking discovery of Vientiane! I like the city very much!

But Kong View was a low light for me!

The big attraction of Kong View was, unsurprisingly, the view! But the river bank is being built up and there is now the foundation of a road where once the ground sloped down to the river. But the proprietors have risen to the occasion and a new building is in place with covered but open seating on two levels affording great views of the river, Vientiane and the Thai town across the river. Behind the higher level is an enclosed area for the hotter (and wetter) months.
While the view is pleasant at all times of day, sunset is very popular as the sun falls behind the Thai side of the river. We prefer lunch time, especially in the dry season, when it is warm and clear but with beautifully gentle colours. It is also quieter. And in the Vientiane climate there are plenty of annoying insects in the evenings.
There is an extensive menu featuring a range of local and Thai dishes together with other Asian specialties and some western dishes. There is a reasonable wine list at moderate prices.
The food is good but service is not coordinated so dishes are delivered randomly over what can be quite a long time. Whether you plan to eat "local style" from a range of dishes, or western style in courses the food delivery is far from satisfactory. Service is patchy and can be poor if the place is busy. Be cautious and get a "read back" of your order before the server leaves: we have twice got courses delivered that we had considered but rejected! Seating is not especially comfortable, but acceptable.
A good place to visit on the right day but don't expect too much.

I took my parents here and even they loved the food. It is traditional food but with an allowance for foreign tastes such as slightly less chilli. Order a fresh coconut while they cook your selection of dishes and watch the Mekong flow by. Highly recommend ordering a wide selection of dishes and put it all in the middle to share, Lao style.

Worth a visit for the cracking view over the Mekong and therefore worth a call ahead to reserve a table river-side. However, this is not really a touristy destination. Judging by the SUVs in the car park, this is a place for the Vientiane elite to come and play: it was pretty busy when we were there and still we were about the only foreigners in the joint.

The menu is enormous which is part of the problem with the food. There was Lao, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Western and many other options on offer in a menu that read like a telephone directory. They could helpfully concentrate in doing less things better. There was nothing wrong with our meal but it was hardly that exciting either. And the Mojito was significantly inferior to the one served up a the Spirit House, also on the river but closer to the city centre. On balance, a couple of evening sundowners is probably your best bet here.

The other issue with it being a place primarily for the locals was the level of English amongst the waiters. This was more or less non existent and, rather than being inept but well meaning - like plenty of other places we have visited - they were inattentive and surly in addition to being incompetent.

It's (relatively) a bit of a schlepp to get out here. If you don't have your own transport then pay your tuk-tuk driver a hit extra to hang around or ask the waiters to book you a taxi a the same time that you ask for the bill.
