“A great evening out”

Great wines, mocktails and modified irish coffees (baileys instead of whiskey!) are just a few of my favourite things at I-beam.

“Great tapas, great wine, great service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

A great addition to the dining scene in Vientiane: a good range of flavorful tapas which can be chosen individually or selected for you to provide a spectrum of tastes and textures. A welcome move is the recent addition of four "set menus" featuring cheese, seafood, meat or vegetarian dishes which are excellent. A really great feature of I Beam is the ability to buy a range of both still and sparkling wine by the glass, from the bottle. And good wine at that!
Another welcome improvement is the addition of a new buffet lunch for 50,000 kip per person. There is a set main course with entree and desert, simple but fresh and tasty. It is very good value.
The setting is pleasant with seating at the bar or at tables, and the service is excellent, led by the proprietor who shows a genuine interest in all the clients.
Highly recommended for lunch or dinnertime.

“Refreshing twist on tapas restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 20, 2012

I-Beam is a slightly quirky place, but refreshing for that. It has the ambience and decor of a wine bar with high stools and small tables. It serves a variety of hot and cold tapas dishes with an emphasis on French cuisine.

The tapas is excellent. I've eaten here three times now and haven't had a bad dish yet. Seafood casserole was delicately done and all the flavours of the different seafood shone out. Nachos con carne had crisp nachos at the top and a good, sweet meat layer lower down, Coq au Vin was presented in a soup terrine and had good hearty flavours. Cold meat platter was definitely for carnivores, but softened a bit by a generous heap of olive tapenade in the centre. Anchovy-stuffed green olives were a real slap in the face - great if you love extreme fish flavours! Lentil salad with bacon also good.

Portions are quite generous, a bit much for one, so this is a place to come to with friends. Expect to pay around 120,000 KIP ($15 USD) for a good meal with beer - more with wine.

Before 7pm they run a happy hour with 2 beers for the price of 1 and free canapes.

Upstairs the relocated Silapa restaurant is just re-opening (21st December).

Overall, definitely worth a try if you are tired of the familar formulas of other restaurants in town.
